Lecture 4 Healthcare programs in Nigeria
1. National Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Buruli Ulcer Control Programme (NTBLCP) Focus : Early detection, treatment, and prevention of tuberculosis, leprosy, and Buruli ulcer. Services : Free TB screening and Directly Observed Treatment, Short-course (DOTS). Partners : WHO, USAID, KNCV, Global Fund .
2 . National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) Focus : Reduction and eventual elimination of malaria. Interventions : Distribution of Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) . Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) . Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and artemisinin -based combination therapy (ACTs) . Partners : PMI-USAID, Global Fund, WHO.
3. HIV/AIDS Control Programme Managed by : National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA). Objectives : Prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT). Free HIV testing and counseling. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) provision. Programs : Test and Treat policy . Index case testing . Youth-focused prevention programs .
4 . National Programme on Immunization (NPI) Focus : Eradication of vaccine-preventable diseases. Vaccines : Polio, measles, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis B, rotavirus, etc. Achievement : Nigeria was declared polio-free in 2020. Partners : GAVI, UNICEF, WHO .
5 . Integrated Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (IMNCH) Strategy Goal : Reduce maternal and child mortality. Components : Antenatal care (ANC). Skilled birth attendance. Newborn care and immunization. Vitamin A supplementation.
6 . National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP) Focus : Cancer prevention, screening, and treatment. Screening : Cervical cancer (Pap smear, VIA). Breast cancer (Clinical Breast Exams, mammography). Challenges : Limited access to radiotherapy and treatment centers.
7. Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) Control Programme Diseases targeted : Hypertension, diabetes, cancers, mental health, and sickle cell disease. Interventions : Health education campaigns. Community screening for high blood pressure and blood sugar. Integration of NCDs into primary healthcare.
8. National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Programs Goal : Provide financial risk protection through health insurance. Includes : Formal Sector Social Health Insurance Program (FSSHIP) . Tertiary Institution Social Health Insurance Programme (TISHIP) . Vulnerable Group Fund (VGF) for indigent populations.
9. Family Planning and Reproductive Health Program Focus : Contraceptive access, reproductive health education. Services : Free contraceptives (implants, injectables , IUDs, condoms), counseling. Partners : Marie Stopes Nigeria, UNFPA, Society for Family Health.
10. National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) Mandate : Ensure safe and adequate blood supply. Initiatives : Voluntary blood donation drives. Screening of donated blood for infections.
11. COVID-19 Response Program Agencies involved : NCDC, Presidential Task Force (PTF), FMOH. Components : Vaccination campaigns. Public health communication. Contact tracing and testing.
