Leonin More than a composer.

French composer of the 12 th century Born in Paris, received training and later worked at the Notre Dame Cathedral

First-known significant composer of organum Organum = the earliest polyphonic music, based on Gregorian chant Style came to be known as “Notre Dame Polyphony” (florid organum with a sense of meter)

Leonin was the first to develop “modal notation” to symbolize rhythm, which laid the basis for notation as we know it. Composed “Magnus Liber” (a book of organum) His work was improved and expanded by Perotin, one of his students.
