UNIT I - Module 3 Personalities who contributed to Understanding Earth’s Subsystem

The desire for knowledge has led to humans better understanding the mysteries of the universe and of Earth. The following scientists, in particular, have spent years researching the processes that transpire on Earth and its different systems.

Alexander von Humboldt Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) is an explorer and geologist who dedicated his life to understanding the effects of geologic and atmospheric factors on organisms.

Alexander von Humboldt Humboldt contributed greatly to biogeography (the study of the geographic distribution of plants, animals, and other forms of life), but his most notable contribution is his idea that the universe is one interacting entity, which he described as cosmos.

James Lovelock James Lovelock (born in 1919) is an English scientist who proposed the Gaia hypothesis. In Lovelock's theory, he compared Earth to an organism that can maintain homeostasis, the state of a relatively stable condition where there is balance in the physical and chemical compositions of a system.

James Lovelock Lovelock proposed that Earth can achieve stability through the interaction of its systems. He added that if changes happen in one system, another system will react and compensate to ensure the survival of the planet and the life it harbors.

James Hutton James Hutton (1726-1797), a Scottish geologist, is known for his studies on Earth's crust. He first observed the presence of shells of marine life on the rocks even though the rocks were far from any body of water.

James Hutton This observation led to him postulating that rocks could have undergone a thorough process and that oceans and seas play a vital role in this process.

James Hutton Hutton also stated that the same geologic processes have been happening since the start of time and will continue happening. This is the fundamental principle in geology called uniformitarianism

Charles Darwin Charles Darwin (1809-1882) is a geologist and a biologist famous for his theory of evolution. Under this idea, Darwin suggested that all life on Earth came from a common ancestor that evolved into complex organisms.

Charles Darwin He stated that organisms evolve as they try to adapt to the changing environment. As evolution happens, the complexity of traits of organisms also increases.

Alfred Wegener Alfred Wegener (1880-1930) is a German meteorologist and physicist known for his continental drift theory. Wegener proposed the idea that the continents were used to be part of a single supercontinent called Pangaea.
