Understanding the Leadership Context
There is always something that needs to be done on
earth –something that will affect humanity:
Need to create something that man will need for
his existence on earth
A proactive need to prevent some catastrophe
Provide solution to some damage man is causing
to himself and others
Need to preserve God’s natural creation
Invent systems that will help to govern humanity
on earth
Introduce ways by which we can live in harmony
with the entire universe and with God

Understanding the Leadership Context
God is in heaven; and He is not physical
God desires to intervene in human life on
earth
He looks down for a man He can partner with
for that positive intervention
He calls someone –male, female, young or old
Equips him with what it takes –gifts, talents
Gives him authority against odds
Shows him principles to follow
Assists him along the way till the work is done

Leadership Definition
Leadership is a partnership, originating
from God, in which God calls a man,
prepares him [equips and transforms
him], gives him a mandate and a message
and commissions him to carry out God’s
clearly identified purposes for humanity
on the earth
[Narh, 2014]

God with the

made unto themselves; He is the true living God

No Partner for Sodom & Gomorrha
Background: When the sin of Sodom and
Gomorrah increased and God became angry
He looked for someone
Missionto redeem that city. He looked for 10
righteous men with the
Mandateto be the salt of that city; 10 people for
whose sake God would preserve the city; men
who would intercede and preach repentance

broken spiritual and societal walls:
Mandate: God sent him and authorized him
Message: The God of heaven will help us rebuild our
city, our lives ad our relationship with our God

The Leadership Context
There must always be a leader
There must always be a follower
There must always be a task to execute
There must be a future good for the
followers [humanity]
The leader must operate from an authority
Partnership with God provides the authority

Building the Leadership Context
Think of a group of people Living together at
one place –location A, intending to go to
another Destination -B
They need someone to take them from location
A to destination B
Think of destination as their utmost expectation;
that which they so much need or desire; their goal(s)
Someone comes along and offers himself and
pledges to do just that for them
They call him their leader.
They listen to and try to follow him

Destination[Goal] can be …
Physical:
1.Moving from one place to another –
usually once in a life time
2.Like the Israelites moved from Egypt
to Promised land
3.Like the Gapeople moved from
Nigeria to settle in Accra

Destination [Goal] can also be …
Spiritual
1.Unlearning the idea of many gods; learning
to worship the one true God –Yahweh
2.Abandoning the ways of men and learning
the ways of God through studying His word
3.Moving from relationships with men only
unto developing a relationship with God
through constant prayer

Destination [Goal] can also be …
Intellectual
1.Like Einstein introducing the law of
relativity to give scientists a new way of
looking at scientific reality
2.Like Michael Jackson teaching musicians
new concepts in music and dance
3.Like Prof Konotey-Ahululeads the world in
sickle cell research and discovery
4.Like Prof Alloteyis consulted around the
world on Mathematics issues

More On Intellectual Shifts
Like Florence Nightingale moving people care
from a low level to high levels of excellence –a
new paradigm in nursing
Like Bill Gates paved the way for world to move
from physical modes of operations to extensive
use of computers
Like Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela
called on people to move from violence to non-
violence as a way of solving human conflicts
Like Mother Theresa shows the way from self-
satisfaction to sacrificing for people’s welfare

Destination [Goal] can be …
Personal State of Being
Jesus took a group made up of mostly
unlearned men
Within the space of three and a half years He
had made them world changers
He gave them a new name and identity
He transformed them from catching fish into
fishers of men
Picked them from nowhere and made them
crafters of human destiny
Peter the once fearful man preached and
3000 souls got saved in one day

Destination [Goal] can also be …
State of affairs of a People
1.Nkrumah took Ghana from a state of
colonialism to a state of self-rule
2.From foreign dependence into a state of
independence
3.Set Ghana to move from expecting
foreign handouts to industrialization
4.Called on African leaders to widen their
vision of leadership –beyond their
countries

Like Pastors are called …
For the Transformation of Men
1.To win men and women located in sin and
rebellion against God
2.To bring them to accept God’s forgiveness
and offer of new life in Christ
3.To begin a new journey to spiritual
perfection
4.Eventually becoming like Jesus Christ our
Lord
5.To prepare them for living eternally Jesus

Putting it together
Leadership is about bringing change in
the state of affairs of followers
Without change we cannot say leadership
is happening or has taken place
Change must be made to happen… it does
not happen spontaneously
It takes a person to bring about change
We call him …
LEADER

led
Identification of a person with the responsibility
to causing active followership

Some Definitions of
Leadership

(Shamir, 1995).
Leadership is the ability to increase followers’
sense of self-efficacy by increasing self worth
and communicating confidence, high
expectations and then linking followers’ goals
to mission, which serves as a basis for
identification;
Generating faith by connecting behaviors and
goals to a dream of a better future

Cacioppe, (1997).
Successful leaders have vision; inspire and
motivate; communicate and clarify the
vision; stay focused; take risks; persevere;
have ability to overcome adversity and
handle difficult situations; are concerned for
people’s welfare; are highly sensitive to
social cues; are the right person, at the right
time and know the right action

House et al, (2004)
Leadership is the ability of an individual
to influence, motivate, and enable others
(its followers) to contribute toward the
effectiveness and success of the
organizations of which they are
members
(House, Hanges, Javidan, Dorfman, &
Gupta, 2004).

Mastrangelo, Eddy, & Lorenzet,
2004).
Professional leadership is about
providing direction, process, and
coordination to the members of an
organization for the purpose of
attaining the organization’s goals
(Mastrangelo, Eddy, & Lorenzet,
2004).

John E. Haggai
Leadership is the disciplineof
deliberatelyexerting special
influence within a group to move it
toward goals of beneficial
permanence that fulfill the group’s
realneeds” John E. Haggai

Focus on Haggai
Discipline-(A branch of knowledge)
leaders are made not born. True leadership is
a discipline
Deliberately–a commitment on the part of
the leader to his calling as a leader, a
spiritual commitment. In times of painful
reverses, strength and wisdom is found and
in times of enormous achievement, gratitude
and humility are revealed.

Haggai -Special influence
That influence is not forced out of fear. It comes
out of profound trust among his followers.
Followers are convinced that through him and
with him they can realize self-enriching,
humanitarian, ennobling and God-glorifying
results, which would otherwise seem impossible.
True leaders are followed out of love and respect
because they display love, humility and self-
control

Haggai -Group
a.People who are in some way homogeneous
in some way –tribe, alumni, country
church, etc.
b.Individuals having a common pool of
needs and expectations
c.Two or more individuals who have
identified a destination or a common
agenda to which they are willing to commit

Haggai -Permanence
a.The vision of the leader should be for
changes that are continuing, enduring,
and lasting –for time and eternity.
b.The term beneficial permanence
contrasts with malevolent permanence.
c.The leader’s goal must not be
detrimental to the group

Haggai -Real needs
a.Physical needs
b.security and safety needs
c.love and belongingness needs
d.Esteem needs
e.need for self-actualization

Physical –health and wholeness
Spiritual –increase in faith towards God

better thinking, creativity

and see if you can identify the parameters that must
be present in a good definition of leadership. You
may not find all the parameters in one definition
Choose threeof the definitions that capture all the
