WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF PHILIPPINE LITERATURE
Definition of Literature: Derived from the LATIN term “LITERA” which means letter. Faithful reproduction of man’s manifold experiences blended into one harmonious experiences. Etymology: Other Definitions:
Philippine Literature Philippine literature is literature from prehistory, through its colonial legacies, and through the present , connected with the Philippines.
Philippine Literature: Pre-Colonial Times The oral literature of the precolonial Filipinos bore the marks of the community. The subject was invariably the common experience of the people constituting the village-food-gathering, creature and objects of nature, work in the home, field, forest or sea, caring for children, etc. Pre-Spanish literature is characterized by: Legends Myths Folk Tales Epics Folk Songs

I dare you! “Ang Alamat ng Bulkang Mayon,” is a story of star-crossed lovers named Daragang Magayon and Paganoron with a tragic ending that led to the rise of the volcano. “Ang Alamat ng Saging ,” is about a King named Barabas who were hated by many people due to his greediness and madness. He always put on his crown to show the people how powerful he is. “Ang Alamat ng Pinya ,” tells the story of a young, lazy girl named Pina, who always made excuses when her mother asked for her help. One day, her mother wished for Pina to be more helpful, and Pina was transformed into a fruit with many eyes—so she could easily find her mother.

2 TRUTHS, 1 LIE How good are you? I dare you! Juan and Maria Makiling are the first man and woman on Earth. This is a story of how the Philippines was created. They are born out of a bamboo stalk that is cracked open by a bird. Aswang are shapeshifters, believed to appear human-like by day but transform into different monstrous forms to harass and eat awake humans at night or day especially pregnant women who are about to give birth. Bakunawa is a serpentine creature in Philippine mythology that is often represented as a gigantic sea serpent. She is believed to be the cause of eclipses, and that she was transformed into a dragon-like creature as punishment.
Philippine Literature: Myths (Mito) Philippine mythology includes a collection of tales and superstitions about magical creatures and entities.

The Monkey and The Turtle is a story of a turtle who finds a banana tree in the river and a monkey who cheats her out of its fruit begins with a catchy folklore situation but ultimately trails off in bits and pieces. The Necklace and the Comb tells the story of Inday, who adored her necklace and comb. She was given these as a family heirloom on her sixteenth birthday. It is a charming tale on how the moon and stars were formed. Biag ni Lam-ang is a story about a boy who refuses to do housework and lies idly under a tree all day. Instead of picking the guava fruit from the tree, he would rather lie under the tree with his mouth open and wait for the fruit to fall.
Philippine Literature: Folktales ( Kwentong Bayan) Folktales are traditional fictional stories. Unlike works of original literary fiction, they are normally anonymous narratives that have been transmitted from one teller to another over an uncertain period of time, and have been shaped by multiple narrators into the form and style that are characteristic of oral narratives.
2 TRUTHS, 1 LIE How good are you? I dare you! Biag ni Lam-ang is an epic story of the Ilocano people from the Ilocos region of the Philippines. The story is a mix of adventure and romance with exciting and unpredictable outcomes. Lam- ang was an extraordinary being. Prince Juan (a Maranao epic) was a great warrior and because of his bravery, no one dared attack Bumbaran . The king became envious of him and in a fit of jealousy prohibited everyone in the kingdom from speaking with Bantugan under pain of death. Hudhud ni Aliguyon , like some hudhuds , tackles the matrimonial aspects of the characters. An episode narrates that after a long fight between the two men, who are unable to defeat each other, the conflict was permanently resolved through exchange marriage among the families of the Aliguyon and Pumbakhayon .
Philippine Literature: Epics ( Epiko ) A long story about a hero that serves as an organizing point of cultural or social identity.
Philippine Literature: Folksongs ( Awiting Bayan) Folk songs are part of folk literature; they are songs that are linked to the life of people, and to the customs, traditions and experiences of a nation, such as the songs of holidays, Christmas, marriage, hunting, harvest, and joyful nights, etc. Leron-leron Sinta Paru-Parung Bukid Bahay Kubo Sitsiritsit
Philippine Literature: Spanish Period Alibata is the first Filipino writing system, replaced by Roman alphabet. The basis for religious practices was the Christian doctrine. Spanish language as the medium of instruction and language of literature. Songs, corridos , and moro-moros are mostly about the legends and traditions of Europe.
Doctrina Cristiana The First Tagalog and Spanish book. Narrates the life and sufferings of Jesus Christ. Recited during lent season. The Passion ( Pasyon )
Recreational Plays a dramatic performance to re-enact the passion and death of Jesus Christ. Cenaculo A play where the search of Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph for the place where they can deliver Jesus Christ. Panunuluyan An Easter Sunday play. Usually held before sunrise. Stages the meeting of the Risen Jesus Christ and His Mother. Salubong A play held in every city fiesta. Commonly for the individuals to enjoy and commemorate their Christianity. Moro-Moro
