Lesson 4: Malnutrition: The types of Malnutrition

Food is an integral part of our daily life. It supplies the nourishment that we need to perform our daily tasks. Nutrients are substances that provide nourishment needed for growth and maintenance of life.

Malnutrition it happens when the body contains insufficient, excessive, or imbalanced consumptions of nutrients. There are two types of malnutrition: undernutrition overnutrition

Undernutrition happens when the body is lacking in essential nutrients that are necessary for the growth and maintenance of life.

Signs of undernutrition Dizziness Irritability Loss of reflexes and coordination Loss of body fats and muscles Poor memory Bleeding and swelling of gums Scaling and cracking of lips and mouth Deterioration of physical features such as sunken cheeks and hollow eyes

Overnutrition happens when a person’s diet provides far too many nutrients for the body to cope with.

Signs of overnutrition Obesity Diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart attack Bleeding in certain areas of the body Difficulty in walking and moving around Hair loss

Effects of overnutrition Poisoning Hardening of arteries Formation of gallstones Heart problems Stomach problems Susceptibly to infection Malnutrition affects people of all ages, gender, and health and it is very common among developing countries.
