2. Leucoderma
(Vitiligo)
Leucoderma, also known as vitiligo, is a
distressing skin condition. The word literally
means white skin. There is a gradual loss of the
pigment melanin from the skin layers which
results in white patches. These patches look ugly,
especially in persons with a dark complexion. The
condition does not cause any organic harm. This
disease is caused neither by any germs, nor is it
due to bad blood. It is considered to be neither
infectious nor contagious.

Causes of Leucoderma
The exact cause of leucoderma is not known but
auto immunity has been play important role. The
main causes of leucoderma are said to be
excessive mental worry, chronic or acute gastric
disorders, impaired hepatic function such as
jaundice, worms or other parasites in the








alimentary canal, typhoid, a defective perspiratory
mechanism, and burn injuries. Heredity is also a
well-recognized causative factor.

Symptoms of Leucoderma
Small White Patch Appear in Beginning
The problem usually starts with a small white spot
which later develops into patches. These patches are
pale in the beginning, but become whiter and whiter
as time passes by due to loss of pigment. As the
spots enlarge, they merge into each other and, in
course of time, form a very broad patch. In some
cases, most of the skin of the body may be covered
with white patches.

Scope of Homoeopathy
Homoeopathy offers very effective treatment

Diet & Regimen:
There are a few instructions for patients
regarding their diet in vitiligo especially with
mention of what they should avoid during the
treatment of vitiligo.
Following are some of our observations
based on our clinical experience of treating a
large number of patients (clinical observations):

• Foods that are excessively sour should be
avoided.

• The ascorbic acid in sour foods tends to
reduce melanin pigmentation. So the patients
should restrict their intake of citrus foods.
• Non vegetarian foods are also to be
avoided as they act as a foreign body to
pigment cells.
• Flavoured drinks are to be avoided.
• Artificial colours used in various food
preparations should also be avoided.
• There may not be enough scientific evidence
to prove how. these foods worsen vitiligo but
our clinical experience has shown that
many patients report worsening of their
vitiligo from these items and hence they are
better avoided.
• Usually small amounts of milk, for example
in tea or coffee, do not cause any problems.
• Do not take salt, curd, buttermilk, papaya,
watermelon, melon etc. with milk.
• Dairy products such as butter, cheese are
also well tolerated.
• If milk is excluded, it should be replaced
with low lactose milk or with Soya milk.
• This should be discussed with a dietician
to ensure that the nutritional balance is
maintained.
• Please avoid salt as well sweet to improve
vitiligo.
• To avoid brinjal, gram, rajama. Do not take
product of Besan, burger, pizza etc.
• Use minimum soap & shampoo.
