LIBERAL ARTS AND THE CAMPUS David W. Orr

A genuine liberal arts education will equip a person to live well in a place How to live in a place ? David Orr argues that attitude of human beings is responsible for environmental degradation Fourth aim of liberal arts

David Orr describes the difference between a resident and an inhabitant in his essay “ Place and Pedagogy” Residents and inhabitants are two types of people living in an area He compares the attitudes of people living in a particular environment and how their attitude affects environment How to live in a place ?

Resident is person who can live anywhere that provides an income No emotional attachment with the place Resident can live and settle in a place easily (adapt easily) At the same time can pack up and leave that place at any time Had a materialistic attitude towards nature Who is a resident ?

Inhabitants are deeply attached to their place of living Deeply rooted to their community/homeland Living in that area for past many generations Inhabitants shows the feature of their place through dressing, speech and behaviour They contribute something to the sustainability and functionality of their community If replaced, it will affect their lifestyle and mental state Who is an inhabitant ?

David Orr gives a detailed comparison of residents and inhabitants, to show how the attitude of people living in an area affects environment. Global environmental crisis is because of this difference of attitude Difference between Residents and Inhabitants

1. Resident is temporary and rootless occupant. Mostly materialistic and consumerist Inhabitants are emotionally attached to their place- cant be separated from their habitat Difference between Residents and Inhabitants

2) Resident is a stranger to one’s own place. Being consumerist, they can damage their place Inhabitant is part of a system that he is living. He depends that place for food, shelter, materials, economic support and sociability Difference between Residents and Inhabitants

3) Resident is unwilling to obey the social order and rules of nature. Inhabitant strives for harmony between human demands and ecological processes Difference between Residents and Inhabitants

4) Resident always thinks about the possibilities of life Inhabitants life is governed by organic harmony Difference between Residents and Inhabitants

5) residents protects nature as a part of following the laws regarding environmental conservation Inhabitants protects nature as part of their ethics (environmental ethics) Difference between Residents and Inhabitants

6) knowledge for a resident is theoretical and abstract. (anthropocentric ) Inhabitants knowledge of living aims towards wholeness (holistic world view) Difference between Residents and Inhabitants

For preserving our nature we should live in a place like an inhabitant We must realise that human beings are just a part of the great web of life David W. Orr argues that, unfortunately our education system prepares the graduates to become residents. Residents are skeptical about the concept of being a global citizen. 4 th mission of liberal arts- how to live well in a place

We have to be a global citizen to protecting our nature A global citizen is someone who understands the wider world Who realizes man as a member of the great web of life Realizes the interconnectedness between living and non living things of the planet Works to make the planet peaceful, sustainable and fairer Who is a global citizen ?

David Orr emphasizes the importance of ecological literacy Ecological literacy means our ability to understand the basic principles of a connected nature , and how to live accordingly Web of life- ecological balance Ecological Literacy

Do they learn connectedness or separation? Do they learn implicatedness or non involvement ? Do they learn that they are only cogs (wheels) in an ecological mechanism ? Do they are exempt from the duties of any larger citizenship in the community of life ? (Aldo Leopold) Liberal arts and the campus

A genuine liberal arts education will foster a sense of connectedness Implicatedness Ecological citizenship provide the competence to act on such knowledge Role of liberal arts education in providing ecological literacy

Term was coined by Andrew Dobson in 2003 Ecological citizenship refers to a new kind of citizenship, that emerges from our new and substantial impact on the environment All human beings are citizens of ecology So our principal obligation is to take care of all the living things of nature Protection should be part of our ethics It’s an essential pre requisite for a sustainable society Ecological Citizenship

Interconnectedness- linkages among the various components of life in this planet Implicatedness- involvement in a crime which causes in the destruction of environment Interconnectedness and implicatedness

1)Nice campus is a place where students learn the lessons of indifference to the ecology of their immediate place Indifferent to human ecology The campus and its region (campus as an ecosystem) are never focused as a matter of academic and practical study What is a “nice campus” ?

2) Students learn the lesson of hypocrisy Students learn that it is sufficient to learn about injustice and ecological deterioration without having to do anything for stopping them It undermines the capacity for constructive action and contributes to demoralization and despair What is a “nice campus” ?

3) Students learn that practical incompetence is a fashion They are not bothered about any issues , except issues affecting their grade points. They are not allowed to use their knowledge regarding environmental protection in practical life What is a “nice campus” ?

Practical incompetence of knowledge regarding environmental protection, is a loss to the personhood of the student and to the larger society It is a loss to their intellectual power and moral development Burden the society with a growing percentage of incompetent people Importance of practical application of knowledge in life ?

A place where indoor learning occurs as a preparation for indoor carriers Young generation of our advanced society are addicted to materialistic comforts, modern gadgets, and consumerism David Orr astonishes that ecological literacy is declining in a situation when it is most needed. Situation of conventional campus
