Introduction Life cycle of silkworms divided into 4 stages Egg , Larva , Pupa , & Adult Silkworm is Holometabolous insect Duration of life cycle is approximately 45 days The life cycle of mulberry & non mulberry silkworm is same A female silk moth lays about 400 eggs Female moth larger than male, & colour of female moth is pale & dark for male
Egg Egg is oval in shape , incubation period is 9-12 days Flat at one end for attachment to substratum Egg has protective covering , outer called chorion , middle serosa & inner vitelline membrane At the anterior side of egg has one opening called micropyle , it has 3 micropylar canals Type of egg is centrolecithal
Larva Egg hatches out into a larva Larval stage consists of 20-24 days Newly hatched larva called black ant Body covered with bristles It undergoes the process of moulting & become pale in colour Larval life consists of 5 larval stages the larva called instar larva Larva is phytophagous
The 5 th instar larva is 10cm in long Consist of 3 part head, thorax , & abdomen Head is formed of 6 segmentas Thorax is formed of 3 segments prothorax , mesothorax , & metathorax Abdomen consists of 11 segments
Pupa Larva passes to the next stage is pupa Pupal stage lasts for 10-12 days Pupa is live inside the cacoon Cacoon is formed as a result of the spinning of silk by the 5 th instar larva Pupa is covered by cuticle , it is brown in colour The adult organs produce in this stage
Adult The adult emerges from the pupa The adult life lasts for 3-5 days They do not feed They live for reproduction , after copulation male die & female die after laying eggs
Egg period Larval period pupal period adult period total period 9-12 days 20-24 days 10-12 days 3-5 days ~45 days Life cycle of silkworm in table form
