MOANA (2016)
REGIONAL VARIATION
EXAMPLE ONE
Tala: In the beginning, there was only ocean until the mother
island emerged. Te Fiti. Her heart held the greatest power ever
known. It could create life itself. And Te Fiti shared it with the
world. (Polynesian accent)
— Polynesia is made up of more than 1000 islands scattered
over the central and southern pacific ocean. Tala is Moana’s
grandmother who is of Polynesian descent so we can hear
her Polynesian accent when she is speaking English.

MOANA (2016)
EXAMPLE TWO
Moana: Come for this? The heart? You mean this heart right here?
Come and get it!
Maui: You are gonna get us killed.
Moana: No, I’m gonna get us to Te Fiti, so you can put it back.
— Although Moana is also a Polynesian, she doesn’t have the
Polynesian accent when she speaks. Moana and Maui are both
speaking in American accent because Auli’i Cravalho (Moana)
and Dwayne Johnson (Maui) are Americans.

VARIETIES ACCORDING TO ATTITUDE
EXAMPLE ONE
Moana: Dad! I was only looking at the boats. I wasn’t gonna get
on ‘em.
Tui: Come on. There’s something I need to show you. I’ve wanted
to bring you here from the moment you opened your eyes. This
is a sacred place. A place of chiefs. There will come a time
when you will stand on this peak and place a stone on this
mountain. Like I did. Like my father did. And his father, and
every chief that has ever been.

MOANA (2016)
And on that day, when you add your stone, you will raise this
whole island higher. You are the future of our people, Moana. And
they are not out there. They are right here. It’s time to be who
they need you to be.
— Moana’s dad, Tui, is explaining to Moana that soon she’ll be
the chief of the people and that they are a lot who is going to
depend on her. The purpose of this conversation is for Moana
to understand that there are a lot of people who need her and
that she is the future of the people.

MOANA (2016)
EXAMPLE TWO
Tala: Go.
Moana: Gramma.
Tala: Go.
Moana: Not now. I can’t.
Tala: You must! The ocean chose you. Follow the fish hook.
Moana: Gramma.
Tala: And when you find Maui you grab him by the ear. You say “I am Moana of Motunui you will board
my boat sail across the sea and restore the heart of Te Fiti.”
Moana: I can’t leave you.
Tala: There is nowhere you could go that I won’t be with you. Go.
+
MOANA (2016)
— Moana’s grandmother, Tala, was sick and she advised Moana
to just go. She told her to find Maui so they can together sail
across the sea and restore the heart of Te Fiti. The purpose of
this conversation is for Moana to go although she’ll be leaving
her grandmother.
