Lifestyle Diseases z

Lifestyle diseases are diseases that appear to increase in frequency as countries become industrialized. This is linked with the way people live their lives. They are sometimes called diseases of longevity . These diseases include diabetes, obesity, heart disease, stroke, and osteoporosis, among others.

Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which the body’s ability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose in the blood. This disease could lead to further complications such as damage to the large blood vessels of the heart, brain, and legs, causing problems in the eyes, kidneys, feet, and nerves. Obesity is the condition wherein the body accumulates too much fat which puts one’s health at risk. It may even result to various illness and health conditions.

Heart Disease covers a very broad category of disease which affect the circulatory system or the heart. This can include congenital heart disease, rhythm irregularities, heart failure, heart attack, unstable angina, mitral valve prolapse, aortic regurgitation, and cardiogenic s hock or endocarditis. Such heart disease may even lead to death . Stroke is a serious, life-threatening medical condition that may cause long-term brain injury and physical disability. It affects brain control; how one moves, feel, communicate, think and act. It may cause paralysis depending on what part of the brain is damaged.

Osteoporosis is a condition wherein there is an imbalance between new bone formation and old bone resorption . The body may fail to form enough new bone, or too much old bone may be reabsorbed, or both. This condition results to decrease in bone mass which can make the bone brittle and at higher risk for damage. It may be caused by lack of calcium and phosphate, which are the two essential minerals for normal bone formation.

It is necessary to take precautionary measures in order to prevent and control acquiring such diseases. One way of doing so is through appropriate supervision and guidance. This involves the following steps: 1. Observing a well-balanced diet 2. Doing daily or regular exercise for at least 30 minutes 3. Taking enough sleep and rest 4. Doing recreational activities 5. Avoiding the use of cigarettes or alcohol
