LIMBIC AND PARALIMBIC SYSTEM Dr. Yashveer Singh SR Neurosurgery

Historical aspect of Limbic system Thomus limbus-Cerebri limbus Paul Broaca -Limbic James papez-papez circuit Paul Maclean Limbic system

The term limbic is drived from Latin word LIMBUS for border or edege or in medical terminology it is a border of anatomical component. It is a functional anatomical system of interconnected cortical and subcortical structures Play a role in learning, emotion and autonomic r4egulation

Functional division of limbic system Rostral limbic system Caudal Limbic system Emotion Memory and Visual-spatial function Amygdala,Septum Orbitofrontal cortex Anterior Insula Anterior Cingulate Hippocampus Posterior parahippocampal formation Posterior cingulate

LIMBIC LOBE Vs LIMBIC SYSTEM LIMBIC LOBE (Cortical areas of limbic system) LIMBIC SYSTEM ( Limbic lobe+Nuclei+Connections ) 1-Parahippocampal gyrus 2-Hippocampus 3-Orbitofrontal cortex 4-Cingulate gyrus 5-Insula 1-Neuclei: Amygdala Septal Nueclei Mammillary body Anterior thalmus 2-Connections: Fornix Medial forebrain bundle Stria terminalis Mammilothalmic tract

Components of Limbic system Olfactory pathways Anterior perforated substance Pyriform lobe Septal area Amygdala Limbic cortex Hippocampal formation Elements of Diencephalon

Olfactory pathway

Anterior perforating substance

Pyriform lobe Principle region of awareness of olfaction Primary olfactory area Fiber from lateral ofcatory stria terminates from it

Septal area

Amygdala Known as Amyddaloid body or Amygdala Present near temporal pole of cerebellar hemisphere in close relation to anterior end of inferior horn of lateral ventricle. Superiorly it is closely related with anterior part of lentiform neucleus . It lies just below the anterior end of tail of the caudate neucleus . Lower end of stria terminalis lies in close relation of amygdaloid complex.

Functions of amygdala Learning Emotions Rewards Memory modulations Sexual orientation Social Intraction Agression,Fear,Anxiety,Feeding ,Drinking PTSD BPD
