∆ what is Listening Skill ? The ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in the communication process Key to all effective communication Without the ability to listen effectively, messages are easily misunderstood

∆ Four Distinct components :- Hear Comprehend Retain Recall

∆ Types of Listening :- 1. Biased / selective listening :- The listener wants to hear only what she/he wants to listen.

2. Sympathetic listening :- – shows the caring attitude of the listener - This type of listening occurs amongst close friends or relatives.

3. Empathetic listening :- Similar to sympathetic listening The listener not only just listens but experiences the feelings of the speaker herself / himself

∆ Critical listening :- Judgement in nature Understanding what is said and evaluating, judging and forming an opinion. Good for business

5. Informational listening :- Paying attention to the kind information being conveyed by the speaker Listening with the goal of learning, understanding and grasping information.

6. Appreciative listening :- Listener seeks certain information which they will appreciate and meet his / her needs and goals .

∆ Effective listening :- Actively absorbing the information given to you by a speaker Showing that you are listening and interested Providing feedback to the speaker so that he or she knows the message was received

∆ Criteria for effective listening :- Be attentive / focused or concentrated Request clarification Paraphrase Avoid noise

∆ Tips for effective listening :- Identification Reception Comprehension / understanding
