What does literary criticism mean? It refers to the analysis, interpretation and discussion of literature. Pertains an idea supported by evidence, relating to theme, style, setting, & historical or political context. Also includes the classification by genre, analysis of structure and judgement of value. Consist of literary devices.
Six (6) A pproaches of L iterary C riticism 1. Structuralist/ Formalist Approach Structuralist approach Is considered language as a system of signs or symbol s and signification as a meaning itself. It examines structures, such as characterization or plot that used to develop general conclusion. Uses literary elements. Sample Scenario : Describing your experience at the beach by saying it is breezy, salty, and cold.
Formalist approach It analyze the genre, form and discourse while diminishing bibliographical, cultural, historical and social contexts. It only examine one particular literary work at a time and not compared or contrasted with another work. Empasizes the literary devices in the text instead of its context. Explore the similarities and differences that help tie together the stories. Formalist Cite an examples to generate the form and diction together to develop a theme. Observe emphasis and coherence in detailing your selection . Focus on the poetic devices rather the plot or sequence of the story or the stanza of the poem.
x 2. Moralist Approach It is a literary critique that judge the value of the literature based on its moral or ethical teachings. This is used to determine whether a work conveys a lesson or message and help the readers lead better lives to improve their understanding. Tips in critiqu ing Moralist literary selection Choose a literary piece that having significant and concerned with values. Give viewpoints or something that can be related to real life. Focus on moralistic definition of relationship, life, individuals that presumes a moral ascendancy of one ’s value . Present an obvious moral philosophy to interrogate a text.
3. Marxist Approach Scrutinizes the text as an expression of contemporary class struggle. It concerns on the isinuations and snags of capitalist system. Perhaps this approach focuses on political and social conditions. It indicates social norms/ values that contains in the text. Tips in critiquing M arxist literary selection Choose a literary piece that attempts to show economic power or less exploitative. Introduce the background of the author in the text. Depict a struggle between classes, or the contribution of conflict in the text. Utilize thesis statement in interpreting the text.
4. Feminist Approach Promote the status of women in terms of economic, sexual, political and national identity in society. Emphasizing the equality of men and women to eliminate discrimination against women or the so-called oppression. Raises the right of women in society towards social justice . 5 . Historical Approach It pertains the circumstances of the authors intention to the text in order to get the attention of the reader. The text background has a great influence in the meaning that the literature is trying to provide. 6 . Reader-Response Approach Argues that the meaning of a text is dependent upon the readers response to it. Hence, two different readers may derive completely various interpretations of the same literary text. Reader’s interactions with the text give the selection’s meaning. Statement Approach 1.) Josh analyzes the reading selection by identifying some factual events and evidence. 2.) Ara analyzes the different standpoints that women try to suggest, to uplift everyone’s spirit. 3.) Writers have forestalled to recieve varried comments for every literary piece. 4.) It scrutinizes both political and social condition of the literary work. 5.) It gives more value to study the literary piece through ethical concerns. 6.)
