LITERARY PERIODS (PHILIPPINE LITERATURE) 21 ST CENTURY LITERATURE
THE JAPANESE PERIOD 1941-1945
Philippine literature was interrupted in its development when another country conquered the Philippines between 1941-1945. Philippine lit. in English came to halt.
Led to all newspapers not to be circulated in the community except for TRIBUNE and PHILIPPINE REVIEW.
FILIPINO POETRY Common theme during this period: Nationalism Country Love Life in the barrios Faith Religion Arts
Three Types of Poetry emerged during this period: HAIKU- a poem of free verse that the Japanese like It was made up 17 syllables, divided into three lines with a 5-7-5 pattern. Usually about nature
2) TANAGA Like Haiku, is short but has measure and rhyme Also allegorical in meaning Allegorical- having a symbolic representation or generalization about human existence
2) TANAGA Four lines 7-7-7-7 pattern
3) Karaniwang anyo (usual form) Common form of poetry has rhyme and meter
Philippine literature in english 1946-1970
Because of the strict prohibitions by the Japanese in the writing and publishing of works in English, Philippine lit. in English experienced a dark period.
In the New Filipino Literature, Philippine Literature in Tagalog was revived during this period Most themes in writing dealt with: Japanese brutalities Poverty of life under Japanese government Brave guerilla exploits
Period of activism 1970-1972
ACTIVISM - the practice that emphasizes direct vigorous action especially in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue
According to Pociano Pineda, youth activism in 1970-72 was due to domestic and worldwide causes, because of the ills of society, the youth moved to seek reforms.
The Literary Revolution The youth became vocal with their sentiments. They demanded a change in the government. It was manifested in the bloody demonstrations and the sidewalk expressions and also in literature.
Period of new society 1972-1980
Started at September 21, 1972 The Carlos Palanca Awards continued to give annual awards.
Poems dealt with: Patience Regard for native culture Customs Beauties of nature and surroundings
Newspapers donned new forms. News on: Economic progress Discipline Culture Tourism And the like were favored
Less favored topics on news: Sensationalized reporting of killings Rape Robberies
Filipinos before were hooked in reading magazines and comics.
Period of the third republic 1981-1985
The Philippines became a new nation, and this, former President Marcos called “The New Republic of the Philippines”. Poems during this period were romantic and revolutionary .
After 10 years of military rule and some changes in the life of the Filipinos, which started under the New Society, Martial Rule was at last lifted on January 2, 1981 .
Many Filipino songs dealt with themes that were true-to-life like those of grief, poverty, aspirations for freedom, love of God, of country and fellowmen.
Post- edsa 1 revolution 1986-1995
History took another twist. Once more, the Filipino people regained their independence, which they lost twenty years ago. In four days from February 21-25, 1986 , the so-called People Power (Lakas ng Bayan) prevailed.
The real Republic of the Phillipines made several changes in the literature. It was noticed in the new Filipino songs, newspapers, speeches and even television programs.
The now crony newspapers that enjoyed an overnight increase in circulation were The Inquirer, Malaya, and the People’s Journal.
Contemporary/ 21 st century period 2001-PRESENT
The new trends have been used and introduced to meet the needs and tastes of the new generation. 21 st Century learners are demanded to be ICT inclined to compete with the style and format of writing as well.
New codes or lingos are used to add flavor in the literary pieces produced nowadays.
PERFORMANCE TASK # 1 LITERARY TIMELINE
INSTRUCTIONS: Complete the literary timeline based on the module and placed it in your portfolio. For each period give at least one highlight or event in the Philippine literature during such period. Be creative in presenting the timeline, drawings or pictures may be added.
GROUP PERFORMANCE: Class will be divided into 10 groups. Each group will be assigned with a literary period. Each group will be given a specific task to perform.
DIFFERENTIATED TASKS: PRE-COLONIAL/ PRE-SPANISH: choose a folk song to be presented in class through a sing and dance, and a member should also present a brief background about the chosen folk song. Spanish Period: Choose a recreational play to be performed in class, just perform a portion of the play like a 5-minute scenario with necessary costume and props. Period of Enlightenment: Choose one of the works of the Ilustrados , to be memorized/ read and presented as oral interpretation with action/ gestures/ formation if necessary.
DIFFERENTIATED TASKS: American period: Choose a poem written during this period and memorize it to be interpreted orally as well. Japanese Period: write your own adaptation of a Haiku (1) and Tanaga (1). And make an artwork out from the poem you have created to be presented in class. Phil. Lit. in English: Look for a sample writing during this period and to be presented in class through explaining its meaning in relation to the themes during that time.
DIFFERENTIATED TASKS: Period of Activism: Present a role-play simulating the events that shaped this period. New Society: look for a sample poem written during this period and explain its meaning in relation to the themes during this time. Third Republic: Look for Filipino songs written during this time and present it to class through an interpretative dance.
DIFFERENTIATED TASKS: Post-EDSA 1 revolution: look also for a song written during this period to be sung with an accompaniment. 21 st century: make a powerpoint presentation integrating presenting sample works and genres that emerged during this period
