Definition of literature Literature is  writing that uses artistic expression and form and is considered to have merit or be important . As an artistic term, literature refers to written works, such as novels, short stories, biographies, memories, essays, and poetry. Literature is any collection of written work, but it is also used more Narrowly for writings specifically considered to be an art form, especially prose fiction , drama, and poetry . in recent centuries, the definition has expanded to include oral literature , much of which has been transcribed.

Definition of literature Definitions of literature have varied over time.  In Western Europe prior to the eighteenth century, literature as a term indicated all books and writing .   A more restricted sense of the term emerged during the Romantic period, in which it began to demarcate “imaginative ” literature. Contemporary debates over what constitutes literature can be seen as returning to the older, more inclusive notion of what constitutes literature. Cultural studies , for instance, takes as its subject of analysis both popular and minority genres, in addition to canonical works .

Types or forms of literary

Poetry A calligram by Guillaume Apollinaire. These are a type of poem in which the written words are arranged in such a way to produce a visual image.

Poetry A poem is a piece of literature that makes use of rhythmic qualities of language, such as phonesthetics , sound symbolism, and meter to convey meaning. Phonesthetics examines the aesthetic appeal of the sounds of certain words or parts of words. Sound symbolism refers to the non-arbitrary relationship between the sounds of speech and their meaning. A meter is the fundamental rhythmic structure of a poem or lines of poetry.

Fiction There are several purposes for fiction, including entertaining , inspiring, informing, and persuading the audience . Fiction writers create stories using their imagination . Fiction writers use figurative language to create stories of completely untrue events, characters, and settings to stimulate the imaginations of their readers . Fictional literature includes a variety of subgenres , such as mystery, romance, or mythology.

Story a narrative, either true or fictitious, in prose or verse, designed to interest, amuse, or instruct the hearer or reader ; tale. a fictitious tale, shorter and less Elaborate than a novel.

AMADO VERA, HERNANDEZ NATIONAL ARTIST OF LITERATURE (1973)

AMADO VERA, HERNANDEZ September 13,1903 – May 24, 1970 “ Makata ng Mangagawa ” Amado V. Hernandez , poet, playwright, and novelist, is among the Filipino writer who practiced “committed art”.

AMADO VERA, HERNANDEZ In his view, the function of the writer is to act as the conscience of society and to affirm the greatness of the human spirit in the face of inequity and oppression.

AMADO VERA, HERNANDEZ Hernandez’s contribution to the development of T agalog prose is considerable- he stripped T agalog of its ornate character and wrote in prose closer to the colloquial than the ‘’official’’ style permitted.

AMADO VERA, HERNANDEZ His novel m ga ibong Mandaragit , First written by Hernandez while in Prison, is the first Filipino socio- Political novel that exposes the ills of the society as evident in the agrarian problems of the 50s.

Hernandez’s other works include: Bayang Malaya Isang Dipang Langit Luha ng Buwaya Amado V. Hernandez: Tudla at Tudling : Katipunan ng mga Nalathalang Tula 1921-1970 Langaw sa Isang Basong Gatas at Iba Pang Kuwento ni Amado V. Hernandez. Mag kabilang Mukha ng Isang Bagol at Iba Pang Akda ni Amado V. Hernandez.
