SESSION: 01 LONG WALL AND SHORT WALL METHOD

Introduction:
1. This method is used to calculate quantity of work
2. This method is most suitable for load bearing structure due to its typical size of item of
work.
3. In this method, the wall along the length of given room is considered as ‘long wall’
while wall perpendicular to long wall is said to be short wall.
Center line
Wall thick-0.3 m
Wall height-3.1m

6 m x 3 m

Procedure:
1. To get length of long wall or short wall, calculate first the center line length of
individual walls.
Example: Refer above diagram for detail
Center to center distance of long wall = Length of wall + ½ width of left side wall +
½ width of right side wall
= 6.0 m + ½ x 0.3 + ½ x 0.3
= 6.3 m
Center to center distance of short wall = Length of wall + ½ width of left side wall +
½ width of right side wall
= 3.0 m + ½ x 0.3 + ½ x 0.3
= 3.3 m
6.3 m

2. Then the length of wall, (out to out) calculated after adding half breadth at each side
or end to its center line length. (This is applicable for long wall only)
Example:
Length of long wall = c/c distance of long wall + ½ width at each side
= 6.3 + ½ x 0.3 + ½ x 0.3
= 6.6 m

3. Thus length of short wall measured (in-to-in) calculated after deducting half breadth
of each side or end to its center line length. (This is applicable for short wall only)
Example:
Length of short wall = c/c distance of short wall - ½ width at each side
= 3.3 - ½ x 0.3 - ½ x 0.3
= 3.0 m
4. These lengths are multiplied by breadth and depth to get quantities of individual item
of work.
Example:
