INTRODUCTION This is a form of underground coal mining where a longwall of coal is mined in a single slice (Typically 0.6m -1.0m thick). Longwall panel is typically 3-4 km long and 250-400m wide. As a cut or slice is taken along the length of the wall.

MACHINERY USE IN LONG WALL MINING
Fig: Working system of long wall mining method
ADVANTAGE OF LONG WALL MINING High recovery Lower operating cost Easier to supervise Increased safety Higher quantity of coal Suitable for thick seam Simple ventilation Better for deep seated mines
DISADVANTAGE OF LONGWALL MINING Small problem = Big production losses. Dust control difficult. Overloading conveyor system.
REASON FOR SLOW PROGRESS OF LONGWALL IN INDIA. Long wall had to co-exist with the conventional mining in most of the mines ,which caused management problem. Coal companies were sensitive to the failure of a few long wall faces and were prepared to risk huge investments. Geological and geotechnical condition were more difficult then expected. Problems in the maintenance of the equipment. Equipment sourced from many suppliers with no accountability .
PERSENT ACTION AND FUTURE NEEDS. Spare parts of management. Workshops and overhauling facilities. Manpower development. Indigenisation. Monitoring of performance.
CONCLUSIONS. Mechanised longwall mining has emerged as the most successful production technology in the global coal mining scenario. Introduction of fully mechanised longwall technology was made in China and India almost simultaneously .
