She is a singer, composer, harpist,
accordionist and pianist who writes, records
and performs world music with Celtic and
Middle Eastern themes.

Before McKennitt composes any music, she
engages in considerable research on a
specific subject which then forms the general
concept of the album.
Before creating “Elemental” and “Parallel
Dreams”, she traveled to Ireland for inspiration
from the country's history, folklore, geography
and culture.
The album “The Mask and Mirror” was
preceded by research in Spain where she
engaged in studying Galicia, a Celtic section of
Spain, along with its abundant Arabic roots.
The result was an album that included
elements of Celtic and Arabic music.
According to the album booklet notes, “An
Ancient Muse” was inspired by travels among
and reading about the various cultures along
the “Silk Road.”

safety education and research.
In 2002, founded the “Falstaff Family
Centre”, which offers facilities to a number of
volunteer and not-for-profit community and
family groups.
Established “The Three Oaks” Foundation, a
charitable body which gives money to
cultural, environmental, historical and social

9. Naciones Celtas
Las naciones celtas o países celtas son aquellas naciones que han mantenido a lo largo
de los siglos sus raíces culturales celtas, y mantienen en particular el uso de una lengua
celta. Hasta el siglo V, el conjunto entero de las Islas Británicas y gran parte de lo que es
hoy Europa occidental eran predominantemente celtas, pero solo los extremos situados
al noroeste del continente conservaron sus lenguas y su cultura celta, debido a que allí
la romanización fue tardía o inexistente, y/o dado que las invasiones germánicas no las
alcanzaron plenamente o no llegaron a asimilar a las poblaciones locales.
La Liga Celta y el Congreso Internacional Celta solo consideran como naciones celtas a
seis naciones que comparten la característica de que el idioma celta es hablado
actualmente por parte de la población y son: Irlanda, Escocia, Gales, Isla de Man,
Cornwall y Bretagne .

10. The Celtic Nations
The Celtic nations are territories in Northern and Western Europe in which that area's
own Celtic languages and cultural traits such as art, history, music, dance and literature
have survived.
The six territories recognized as Celtic nations are Brittany (Breizh), Cornwall (Kernow),
Ireland (Éire), the Isle of Man (Mannin), Scotland (Alba), and Wales (Cymru). Each of
these regions has a Celtic language that is either still spoken or was spoken into modern
times.
In addition, areas of north-western Spain and Portugal, particularly Galicia, Cantabria and
Asturias and Minho, Douro, Tras-os-Montes (Northern Portugal) are oftentimes identified
as Celtic, although none of them have Celtic speaking people.
The ancient Celts extended their territory to most of Western and Central Europe,
Eastern Europe and part of central Anatolia, mainly during the Iron Age (750-50 BC),
their maximum expansion occurred around 275 BC, just before the expansions of the
Roman Republic and Germanic tribes in Europe.
Festivals celebrating the culture of the Celtic nations include the Festival Interceltique de
Lorient (Brittany), the Pan Celtic Festival (Ireland), the National Celtic Festival
(Portarlington, Australia), the Celtic Media Festival (showcasing film and television from
the Celtic nations), and the Eisteddfod (Wales).

Loreena nació el 17 de Febrero de 1957, en
Morden, Manitoba y vivió ahí hasta 1981,
cuando decidió trasladarse a Stratford, en
Ontario, donde aún reside.
Sus padres eran de ascendencia irlandesa
y escocesa. Su padre Jack, murió en 1992 y
su madre Irene vivió de 1931 a 2011.
Cuando era joven quería ser Veterinaria,

Biography
Loreena was born in Morden, Manitoba,
Canada, on February 17, 1957. She moved to
Stratford, Ontario, in 1981, where she still
resides.
Her parents were of Irish and Scottish descent
Jack, who died in 1992, and Irene McKennitt
(1931-2011).
When she was young she wanted to become a
veterinarian. However, she would later state
that music chose her rather than she it.
Developing a passion for Celtic music, she
learned to play the Celtic harp.
She began performing in the streets at various
places, including St. Lawrence Market in
Toronto in order to earn money to record her
first album, “Elemental”, in 1985.

En 1990 McKennitt compuso la música para el
documental “The Burning Times”, una revisión
feminista sobre los juicios de brujería, en la

In 1990, McKennitt provided the music for the
documentary “The Burning Times”, a feminist
revisionist account of the witchcraft trials in
Early Modern Europe, between 1480-1750.
The main theme would later be re-recorded by
her and her band and called "Tango to Evora",
a track that appears on her album The Visit.
In 1993, she toured Europe. In 1995, her
version of the traditional Irish song "Bonny
Portmore" was featured in the Highlander
series.

13. Su sencillo “The Mummers’ Dance” fue muy

received airplay in North American markets
during the spring of 1997, and was used as
the theme song for the TV series Legacy. It
also saw use in the trailer for a wide-release
1998 Drew Barrymore film “Ever After”.
Her music appeared in the movies The Santa
Clause, Soldier, Jade, Holy Man, The Mists of
Avalon and Tinkerbell; and in the television
series Roar, Due South, and Full Circle
(Women and Spirituality).
In September 2006, McKennitt performed live
at the Alhambra. The performance premiered
on PBS and in August 2007 was released on a
three-disc DVD/CD set titled Nights from the
Alhambra.
In 2008, McKennitt wrote and composed a
song she titled "To The Fairies They Draw
Near" as the theme song for Disney's direct-to-
video animated film Tinker Bell. She also
provided the narration for the film.

14. A principios de 2008, Loreena retornó al
estudio de Peter Gabriel “Real World” para
grabar “A Midwinter Night’s Dream”, una
versión extendida de su mini-álbum de 1995

In early 2008, she returned to Peter Gabriel's
Real World Studios to record “A Midwinter
Night’s Dream”, an extended version of her
1995 mini-album “A Winter Garden: Five
Songs for the Season”. The album was
released on October 28, 2008.

Since the release of “An Ancient Muse”,
McKennitt has toured consistently.
In 2007 she made an European and North
American tour and another extensive tour
across Canada and United States later that
year. Then she made a tour of Europe in
2008 and a Mediterranean tour in 2009 with
stops in Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon,
Hungary and Italy.

On September 17, 2009, McKennitt
announced that she planned to release a
two-disc album titled “A Mediterranean
Odyssey”.

15. El primer disco “From Istanbul to Athens”,
consistió de 10 nuevas grabaciones en vivo
hechas durante su gira Mediterránea del
2009, incluyendo canciones que ella nunca
antes había grabado en concierto.

The first CD, "From Istanbul to Athens",
consisted of 10 new live recordings made
during her 2009 Mediterranean tour, including
songs she had never before recorded in

had a Mediterranean theme which McKennitt
edited herself . It contained previously
released studio recordings created between
the years of 1994 and 2006.

November 16, 2010, saw the US release of
McKennitt's latest studio album, “The Wind
That Shakes the Barley”. Recorded at the
Sharon Temple, Ontario, it consists of nine
traditional Celtic songs.
"Every once and again there is a pull to return
to one's own roots or beginnings, with the
perspective of time and experience, to feel the
familiar things you once loved and love still",
said McKennitt.

16. Después del lanzamiento del álbum “The
Wind that Shakes the Barley”, Loreena
visitó varios países para promoverlo.

On November 30, 2012, McKennitt lent her
support to Kate Winslet’s Golden Hat
Foundation together with Tim Janis, Sarah
McLachlan, Andrea Corr, Hayley Westenra,
Sleepy Man Banjo Boys, Dawn Kenney, Jana
Mashonee, Amy Petty and a choir etc
performing on "The American Christmas Carol"
concert in Carnegie Hall.
