Features of Loud Reading
1. Sound
–Audible to the listeners
–Consider the listeners
–Clarity of sound
–Fluency
–Pitch of Voice

2. Pronunciation
–Not exactly as the British received but closer or nearer
–Silent letters e.g. honour, hour, etc.
–Clear
–Soft
–Nuances e.g. advise, advice, disease, decease

3. Stress
–Stress on the proper syllable: The syllable which takes the
better part of the breath is stressed
–Stress pattern is fixed
–Each letter is not stressed in English as Indian languages do
–Stress changes the meaning

4. Intonation
–Intonation is the variation in pitch for conveying personal
intention and emotions
–Falling tone: 1. In affirmative or an assertive sentence
imparting simple information2. In sentences which begin
with question words 3. In tag questions where the answer
is expected is to confirm 4. I commands 5. In exclamation
expressing joy or an unbelievable pleasant surprise

5. Meaningful Chunks
–Bad readers make fixations on every word
–Good readers can take in more words in each fixation than
the bad ones
–form meaningful group of words: Words that we can take
up at one time
–Formation of group of words depend on the capacity of
students, grouping will differ from class to class
–Speed of reading

6. Pauses
–Stop for a while
–Pauses are meaningful
–Give time for the students to assimilate
–Speed and comprehension
–Say 1,2,3 in your mind before you read the next word or
part
–Have a proper practice ‘riyaz”

7. Punctuation Marks
–Signals for the proper reading
–Short pause –longer pause
–Rising and falling tone
–Change in the sound in case of direct speech

–Facial expressions showing the understanding of the text or
the message
–Meaning of the passage should be clear by the expression
–Listeners look at the speaker to get the clues

9. Body Language
–Movement of hands, fingers
–Posture
–Movements in the class, purposeful and meaningful
–Help as a clue for getting the meaning

10. Consider the listeners
–Check whether the listeners understand the meaning
–Involvement of the listeners
