definition Operation procedure where the fetus after the end of 28 th week is delivered through an incision on the abdominal and uterine wall. In this operation the extraction of baby is done through an incision made in the lower segment 2-2.5 inches above the symphiasis pubis.
indications Where vaginal delivery is not possible due to: Placenta praevia . Pelvic mass causing obstruction Large fetus Small pelvis(passage) Malpresentation e,g breech , transverse presentation Failure to progress in labour

Green armytage forceps This instrument has a traingular tips used for grasping the edges of the uterine incision. Ratchet lock makes the grip firmer. Used as a haemostatic for controlling multiple bleeding points during the caesarean section from the cut edges of uterine incision without damaging the uterine wall. It is also used instead of sponge holding forceps to trace the cervix for cervical tear.
Umbilical cord cutting scissor This instrument is 10.5 cm long. Blades are broad and curved and on closing they meet at their tips leaving gap in between. this ensures firm grip on the umbilical cord when the cord is being cut.
Cord clamp Used for clamping the umbilical cord. Disposable obstetric clamp. Made up of plastic
oxytocin Each ml contains 10 units of drug. Oxytocin is a natural hormone that causes the uterus to contract. Used to induce labour. Control bleeding after child birth. also used to induce an abortion. Can be given IV/IM
ERGOMETRINE Also known as ergonovine . Used to cause contractions of the uterus. Used to treat heavy vaginal bleeding after child birth Can be given through mouth, IV ,IM
