There are more than 150 languages and
dialects spoken in the Philippines. Out of 150
eight of them are recognized as major
languages in the country namely, Tagalog,
Cebuano, Ilocano, Hiligaynon, Bicolano,
Waray, Kapampangan and Pangasinan.

During the Spanish Colonial Era. Spanish was the
language of teaching in schools, religious rites and
activities, and even government office transactions
When the Americans occupied the Philippines, they made English
the official language in schools and government offices.
Manuel L. Quezon, the 2nd President
was among the Filipinos who made
contributions to the Philippine history
that led to the establishment of a
national language. He was adamant that
having a national language was crucial.
It is a symbol of people's freedom,
independence, and solidarity, he
continued.

2ND PRESIDENT OF THE PHILIPPINES
FATHER OF NATIONAL LANGUAGE
Eventually, Tagalog was chosen as the
national language. It was chosen for the
reason of its advanced structure and it has the
greatest number of speakers. On December
31, 1937, President Manuel Quezon proclaimed
the language, Tagalog as the National
Language of the Philippines and August 13-19
National Language Week (Linggo ng Wika).
Later, the 1987 Constitution declared Filipino,
as the National Language of the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Manuel L. Quezon was honored as
the Father of the National Language.
