SPIDERS There are at least 50,000 spider species in the arachnid family Spiders are defined as having eight jointed legs, no wings, no antennae and only two body sections: the thorax and the abdomen. All spiders have some amount of venom with varying degrees of potency. The venom is injected through the hollow fangs into the victim. The venom will rapidly paralyze the victim and aid in digestion. Fortunately, most spiders are not dangerous to humans because their fangs are either too short or too to penetrate human skin.
Symptoms :- Body as a whole Pain similar to a bee or wasp sting at the site of the bite. Sense of swelling of lips and throat . Respiratory Difficulty in breathing Eyes, ears, nose and throat Angioedema (eye lid puffiness)
Skin temperature over the bite area tends to be warmer than the surrounding area. 4. Skin Redness Rash Itching Swelling at the site of bite 5. Heart and blood vessels Rapid heart rate and low blood pressure .
Brown Recluse Spider • The brown recluse spider is also known as the violin spider or fiddleback spider. • It is a venomous spider, Loxosceles reclusa, of the family Sicariidae. • It is usually between 1/4 and 3/4 inch but may grow larger. • It is brown and usually has markings on the dorsal side of its thorax, with a black line coming from it that looks like a violin with the neck of the violin pointing to the rear of the spider resulting in the nickname "fiddleback spider" or "violin spider". •It has six eyes rather than the typical eight and the tail-end segment has no markings.
Scientific Classification Kingdom - Animalia Phylum - Arthropoda Class- - Arachnida Order - Araneae Family - Sicariidae Genus - Loxosceles Species - L.reclusa
Bi nomial name Loxosceles reclusa It usually bites only when pressed against human skin such as when putting on an article of clothing. Symptoms •The wound takes on a bull's-eye appearance, with a center blister surrounded by an red ring and a blanched or white ring.
•The bite produces a mild stinging, followed by local redness and intense pain within eight hours. •The fluid-filled blister then sloughs off to leave a deep, enlarging ulcer. •The ulcer can enlarge and involve underlying skin and muscle tissue. •Pain may be severe. •A generalized red, itchy rash usually appears in the first 24-48 hours. •Other symptoms include fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches and hemolytic anemia. •On rare occasions death results ,more often in children.
Black Widow Spider Binomial name - Latrodectus mactans Scientific Classification Kingdom - Animalia Phylum - Arthropoda Class - Arachnida Order - Araneae
Family - Theridiidae Genus - Latrodectus Species - mactans •Latrodectus includes approximately 31 recognized venomous species, with the black widow spider being the best known member of the group. •Widow Spiders carry a neurotoxic venom. •The black widow spider is a shiny, inky black spider with a large round tail segment (abdomen), generally measuring from one-half inch to one inch in length. •Widow spiders are large, strong-looking house spiders. •The abdomen is dark and shiny, and has one or several red spots, either above or below.
• Male widows, like most spiders, are much smaller than the females and are generally considered to be much less dangerous than the females. •Widows tend to be quite non-aggressive, but will bite if the web is disturbed and the spider feels threatened. Sym ptoms •The bite feels like a pinprick. •A black widow spider bite gives the appearance of a target, with a pale area surrounded by a red ring.
• At first you may notice only slight swelling and faint red marks. Within a few hours, intense pain and stiffness begin. •Other signs and symptoms include-chills, fever, nausea, severe abdominal pain etc. •Severe muscle pain and cramps may develop in the first two hours. •Severe cramps are usually first felt in the back, shoulders, abdomen and thighs. •Other symptoms include weakness, sweating, headache, anxiety, itching, nausea vomiting, difficult breathing and increased blood pressure.
Wolf Spiders Wolf Spiders are large hairy spiders up to 3-4 inches across
• They are a mottled gray-brown color. •They are aggressive, come after their prey and are fast runners. •Bites from a wolf spider can cause pain, redness and swelling. •The large jaws/fangs can cause a tear in the skin as they bite. Swollen lymph glands may develop. •The skin area at the bite may turn black. •Swelling and pain can last up to ten days.
Tarantulas •Tarantulas are also large hairy spiders with sharp bristles. •The hairs are easily shed or can be rubbed off.
•Handling a tarantula can result in irritation to the skin. •If hands are not washed after handling a tarantula and eyes are touched the sharp hairs can cause eye irritation. •Their bites can be quite painful because of the large size of the spider.
Treatment • Clean the wound with mild soap and water. Apply an antibiotic ointment three times a day to help prevent infection. •Apply a cool compress over the bite for 15 minutes each hour. Use a clean cloth dampened with water or filled with ice. This helps reduce pain and swelling. • If possible, elevate the affected area. • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as needed. •If the affected area is itchy, an antihistamine, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or certirizine (Zyrtec), might help.
