Application letter

Slide Content

What is your idea about an application letter?

A letter of application can also be considered as a cover letter because it introduces and emphasizes special points of the resume and shows how a particular skill or qualification is suited to a particular job.

It has the main job of introducing the resume which in turn introduces a person to a prospective employer for a possible interview and eventually helping him to find a job.

. It has the mission to sell the services, qualifications, character and personality of the applicant. It also serves as a referral record of the employer for the future reference. It should never be treated as an autobiography.

Sections of an Application First Section – Attracting Attention or Letter Establishing Contact Second Section – Creating Interest or Desire Third Section – Convincing the Reader Fourth Section – Stimulating Action

First Section – Attracting Attention or Letter Establishing Contact Tell how you have known of the opening and the type of position you are applying for. You can also illustrate here your knowledge of the company and its goals as well as your strong qualification/s in connection to the requirements to benefit the prospective employer.

First Section – Attracting Attention or Letter Establishing Contact Ex. In response to your advertisement which was posted on The Manila Bulletin on Sunday, January 18, 2018, I want to apply to a teaching position in the reputable veterinary and agricultural educational institution in the Northern Manila, the De La Salle Araneta University.

Second Section – Creating Interest or Desire Mention your qualifications in relation to the job you are applying for. These include your educational qualifications and work experiences if you have.

Emphasize the positive side of your personality. You may also include an analysis of the agency or the particular requirement of the position which you posses

Ex: I am 38 years old, single, a licensed teacher and a graduate of Bachelor of Arts, major in English at the University of Nueva Caceres in Naga City; Teacher Certificate Program at the Ateneo de Naga University; and Master of Arts in Education, major in English Language Teaching at the De La Salle Araneta University. Now, I am enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy in English Language Studies at the Graduate School of the first university in Asia, the Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomas.

Third Section – Convincing the Reader Discuss your work history, work related recognitions and academic awards if possible.

I worked in Bombo Radyo Philippines, Inc. as the news director and part-time disc jockey for almost six years. I also worked in some call centers for education here in Manila and now I am the COORDINATOR of the English Department of De La Salle Araneta University. During my five years in the broadcast industry, I was engaged in the operation of the news center of Bombo Radyo DZLG Legazpi including the production of different radio programs. I taught Korean students both off-line and on-line when I was still working in call centers for English Language Education here in Manila. Now, I am trying my best as a middle administrator and teacher in the College Department of DLSAU. I spent my first two years in teaching as a full-time teacher in English in the High School Division of the Basic Education Department.

Fourth Section – Stimulating Action Request for an interview. Mention how you would be contacted by the addressee. State your phone number or your e-mail address. You can also mention your intention to follow up with a phone call. Do not forget to thank the addressee.

Fourth Section – Stimulating Action Ex: Should you consider this letter, I am very much willing to be interviewed by you at your most convenient time. You may contact me at my mobile number, 09082404123 or you may notify me through my email [email protected]. Thank you very much .

Classification of Application Letter Solicited Application Letter A solicited application letter is written in response to an advertisement . The following should be remembered in writing this kind of application letter: Write immediately the letter not sacrificing the content. Immediacy here is the name of the game. Be unique and innovative. Catch the attention of the prospective employer by making your letter unique.

Be sure that you meet all the requirements mentioned in the advertisement. Follow strictly where and to whom to address the letter and what to include as supporting documents.

Unsolicited Application Letter Also called prospecting or cold application , this is written either in the belief that there is an opening in an agency or in response to what he/she has heard that that particular agency has a vacancy. In mentioning the sources of the vacant position, one should consider the credibility of the person who relayed the information.

Unsolicited Application Letter Dr. Rosario T. Chu, the dean of the College of Arts, Sciences and Technology encouraged me to apply to a post in teaching in the SHS of your esteemed institution, the De La Salle Araneta University.

Tips in Writing Application Letter Make your introductory paragraph unique. Avoid trite opening such as: I wish to apply for the _________ Please consider me an applicant __________ I am applying for the position of __________ I am writing because __________

2. Your letter of application should be as personalized as can be. Do not copy from books because as much as possible your letter should reflect your character. 3. In citing your character references, be sure that you have informed them that you included their names in your RESUME.

4. Avoid participial endings for they connote fragment sentences. These include: Believing that … Hoping for your consideration … 5. Avoid having error including typographical errors. 6. Use one sheet only.

7. Do not leave the inside address without the specific name of the person in charge of hiring. Do all what you can to get the name of the person concerned. 8. Be sure that you properly spelled the name/s of the employer/s. 9. Salary should not be mentioned unless requested by the advertisement/employer. However, when it is mentioned, it should be done in such a way that you neither overvalue nor undervalue your services.

10. Do not be assertive of reliability, capacity for hard work or intelligence. This kind of self-appraisal is usually best understated. Your letter and resume can say more about you than you can gracefully say about yourself. 11. Do not photocopy your application letter. Impress your prospective employer by making them believe that your really exerted effort in its production, thus showing your interest to join the company.
