Character:
The central character for this
advertisement is Madonna, who is
advertising her “Ultimate Hits
Collection.” Madonna’s USP is herself
and so the only image is a large close up
shot of Madonna making direct address
with the reader of the music magazine.
The close up shot allows the reader to
see the whole character of Madonna
and therefore establish who she is easily
from just looking at the magazine. The
direct address she is making with the
reader helps establish a connection with
them therefore can engage the audience
to become interested in purchasing her
album. The image of Madonna is a
combination of a feature in ‘Bazaar’
magazine in the 1990s and another
iconic portrait by Alberto Tolot in 1987
and so Madonna is paying pastiche to
her own previous work and is reminding
the reader of how this album is a
“celebration” of Madonna and all her
music over the decades. Madonna’s
makeup consists of heavy bright blue
eyeshadow, the bright blue connotates
her bright personality and therefore
highlights the “celebration” aspect of
her Ultimate Hits Collection. Madonna’s
lipstick is a deep red, this deep red
colour highlights Madonna’s promiscuity
which she often expresses through her
songs that feature on the album such as
“Like a Virgin”.
Iconography:
An iconic image in this album
poster advertisement is the pop
art that features throughout the
main image. Pop art became
prevalent in the late 50’s as part
of a visual expression movement.
Using the pop art and the iconic
image of Madonna combined
helps to establish the idea that
this album is celebrating the work
of Madonna from the past.
Madonna’s hairstyle is similar to
Marylin Monroe, which is iconic
of the 50’s and therefore
Madonna is establishing the fact
that some of her songs are old
“vintage” Madonna such as
Holiday and Into the Groove. Colour Scheme:
The prominent colour scheme are bright neon
colours, such as a bright neon blue, pink and
yellow which are eyecatching for the audience
when they see the poster. The neon colours
are associated with the 90’s rave scene and
also the 80’s with the dance pop genre
requiring neon costumes to stand out in places
this therefore highlights Madonna’s biggest
hits which were in the 90’s and 80’s.
Setting:
There’s no particular setting
established in this poster,
however, the background is in a
sepia, old vintage look filter. The
fact that the background is like
this is to further establish that the
album features many vintage
Madonna songs such as Like a
Prayer and Vogue.
Masthead:
The masthead looks similar to a stamp effect
which indicates her authoritive and official
status in the music world as she has stamped
her name all over the music industry. The pink
splatter on the Celebration stamp highlights
her feminine corruption suggesting that she
has broken the mould for femininity and has
restablished how women can behave in the
music industry by dressing masculine such as in
Vogue, and also exploring her sexuality in songs
such as Like a Virgin.
