Introduction It is believed that Maharishi Patanjali was the avatar of Adi Shesha - the Infinite Cosmic Serpent upon whom Lord Vishnu rests. He is considered to be the compiler of the Yoga Sutras, along with being the author of a commentary on Panini's Ashtadhyayi, known as Mahabhasya. He is also supposed to be the writer of a work on the ancient Indian medicine system, Ayurveda.

Life The life history of Patanjali is full of legends and contradictions. There are no authentic records regarding his birth. As per one legend, he fell (pata) into the hands (anjali) of a woman, thus giving him the name Patanjali. Maharishi Patanjali is a saint who is believed to have lived some time during the 2nd century BCE. It is believed that Maharishi Patanjali lived in Nepal, Kashmir, Sri Lanka, and several places in India. Maharishi Patanjali is said to be the incarnation of Anantha, the holy serpent on whom Maha Vishnu reclines in Yoga Nidra. 

Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Patanjali synthesized and organized knowledge about yoga from much older tradition. The yoga sutra is one of the foundational texts of classical Yoga Philosophy. The Yoga sutras have 196 Sanskrit sutras organized in 4 chapters. The yoga sutras were collected sometime between 500 BCE and 200 BCE. Maharishi Patanjali is considered to be the compiler of the Yoga Sutras and the author of a commentary on Panini’s Ashtadhyayi, referred to as Mahabhasya. The four chapters of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra are named according to their subjects;   Samadhi Pada, Sadhana Pada, Vibhuti Pada, and Kaivalya Pada .

Chapters Samadhi Pada : The first chapter of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras provides a definition and the purpose of yoga. Various approaches that can be used to achieve the objectives of yoga are included. Sadhana Pada : The second chapter includes the practical approach to attaining the goals of yoga. It also stated about eight limbs of yoga called  Astanga yoga . Vibhuti Pada : It is about the results, power, and manifestation acquired by yoga. Kaivalaya Pada : It is the last chapter of Patanjali Yoga sutra that includes the path of devotion, the path of Karma, and the path of knowledge.
