MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY How to maintain a healthy work-life balance

How to maintain a healthy work-life balance? Key Facts Work-life balance is about finding a way to manage the demands of your work with your personal life and the things that ‘top you up’. A good work-life balance means you can be happy and productive at work and also have time for yourself and your family/friends/hobbies. If you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed at work or at home, acknowledge that this is not a sign of weakness and ask for help and support.

How to maintain a healthy work-life balance?

What is work-life balance? A good work-life balance means you have harmony (most of the time) between the different aspects of your life. Outside of work you will have time to spend on other things, such as caring for yourself and your family, and leisure activities much like when you are at work, you are able to focus on your tasks and can work optimally without outside distraction. Therefore, work-life balance refers to the juggle between the demands of work and your home and family life.

What is work-life balance? In reality, work life balance is different from person to person. For some, work-life balance could mean the ability to stop working at four every day and spend the rest of the evening pursuing personal interests. For others, it may mean being able to work a flexible schedule to prioritize caregiving duties therefore being able to take some work home. Managing a healthy work-life balance is essential for overall well-being and productivity. It can be challenging, but with dedication and a few strategies, you can achieve a healthier balance between your professional and personal life.

What is work-life balance? Here are some examples of what a healthy work-life balance might look like: Work-related stress doesn’t follow you home Disconnecting from work-related messages once you’re off the clock Feeling energized and excited to come into work Stepping away from work to deal with personal matters when necessary Taking time off when you need it Being honest with your manager if things outside the office are impacting your work

Effects of work-life imbalance “If a healthy work-life balance is not restored in time and a person is unable to replenish themselves sufficiently, it can have consequences for mental and physical health,” Lauren Leyman , Akeso One of the outcomes caused by excessive stress due to imbalances in your work-life is burnout. And while you’re usually aware of being under a lot of stress, you don’t always notice burnout when it happens. You may get burnout if you have focused all your energy on your work for a long time and not given enough energy to your health, family/friends and leisure.

Effects of work-life imbalance

Effects of work-life imbalance Burnout is usually an extreme form of work-related stress. It can also be due to other parts of your life, such as being a long-term carer. Burnout is a gradual process. It doesn't happen overnight. The signs and symptoms are subtle at first but become worse as time goes on. If excessive stress feels like you're drowning in responsibilities, burnout is a sense of being all dried up.

Effects of work-life imbalance “Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands. As the stress continues, you begin to lose the interest and motivation that led you to take on a certain role in the first place.” HelpGuide.org Being burned out means feeling empty and mentally exhausted, devoid of motivation, and beyond caring.

How can you work towards a balanced work-life? Pro tip: Don’t expect to be able to do all this at once! Accept that it won’t be perfect! Accept that your work-life balance won’t always be perfect. Give yourself grace as you figure out what balance looks like for you and how you can get closer to achieving it in your personal and work life. And, even when you think you have everything figured out, there will always be days that are a little out of balance. Remind yourself that it’s OK. There is no one perfect schedule. Tomorrow is a brand-new day, with another opportunity to attempt work-life balance again.

How can you work towards a balanced work-life? Set Your Priorities At times, it may feel like you’re being pulled in 20 different directions, both personally and professionally. Take a breath and make a list of your responsibilities then prioritize what’s most urgent. Listing out your priorities allows you to tackle the more pressing matters first and strategize on how best to check the remaining items off your to-do list. When your to-do list seems too long or unmanageable, evaluate and prioritize.

How can you work towards a balanced work-life? Set Goals Setting clear goals for your workday and work week allows you to formulate a plan to ensure they will be met. Keep longer-term goals such as KPIs or personal development goals on your radar as well. Goal setting works also in your personal life. Setting a goal for the number of hours in a week you want to spend at the gym or doing a hobbie such as knitting. Without set goals, you may feel adrift or overwhelmed by your workload. Having clearly outlined goals allows you to stay focused, organized, and set up for success. Also, allowing you time to destress and regroup outside of work.

How can you work towards a balanced work-life? Set Boundaries We all want to be that employee who goes above and beyond for their team. That said, you need to establish some boundaries with your team so that you can maintain a healthy work-life balance. Having set boundaries with your team gives you a chance to step away from your work without feeling guilty. Work emergencies are bound to arise occasionally, so have a set communication plan for after-hours issues.

How can you work towards a balanced work-life? Learn to say “no” If you’re a people pleaser—like many of us are—you may find setting boundaries and saying no to something challenging, even uncomfortable. Declining a request for help can be especially hard if you feel like you may be letting your boss, colleague, or even a family member down. However, if you genuinely want to create a more balanced lifestyle, you have to start making the most of the power of “no.” Every time you say yes to extra work, you’re likely saying no to family time. Equally, every time you’re saying yes to a family member dropping in during work hours, you’re saying no to the most productive workday.

How can you work towards a balanced work-life? Schedule personal time in your calendar Most of us have good intentions when it comes to our personal lives. We want to take more breaks, spend more time with our families, and maybe even pursue a hobby. But the reality is, we get caught up in work, and all those good intentions go out the window. One way to prevent this is by firmly planning and scheduling personal time into your calendar. For example, if you want to play a sport once a week, add it to your calendar. It now becomes a concrete plan versus just a vague wish. You can also do this for time with family and friends. Making a calendar entry not only helps you stick to your good intention, but it keeps others from scheduling something into an apparently open slot.

How can you work towards a balanced work-life? REMEMBER! ONE DAY AT A TIME. You will not get it right all at once, in your first attempt. Working towards a healthy balanced work-life takes time and commitment. Be Kind to Yourself!
