Nursing management Nursing management is an activity which performs certain functions to obtain effective acquisition, allocation and utilization of human efforts and physical resources in order to accomplish organizational goals such as optimum patient care.
Functions of management 1- Planning : is the process of deciding in advance what is to be done, in the future, how is it to be done and who will do it. It helps in bridging the gap between where we are and where we want to reach. 2- Organizing : is the process of starting the execution of plans by clearly assigning jobs and clarifying working relationships and judiciously arranging resources to achieve goals.
Functions of management 3- Staffing : it refers to recruitment, selection, training, development and appointment of the human resources so that adequate man power is available to carry out the tasks. 4- Directing : it means give assignments, orders and instructions to worker to understand what is expected of him to carry out the tasks efficiently and effectively. 5- Controlling : This function ensures that the activities being performed conform to the plans set up for the organization in order to achieve the objectives.
Levels of management: on organizational basis as (hospital)
1-Top level of management : represented by governing board - Top management lays down the objectives and broad policies of the organization. - It appoints (hire) the executive for middle level i.e. departmental managers. - It controls & coordinates the activities of all the departments. - It is also responsible for maintaining a contact with the outside world. .
Nurse Blogger 2-Middle level management: represented by hospital administrator. They execute the plans of the organization in accordance with the policies and directives of the top management. They make plans for the sub-units of the organization. They participate in employment & training of lower level management. They interpret and explain policies from top level management to lower level.
Lower level management represented by department heads Assigning of jobs and tasks to various workers. They guide and instruct workers for day to day activities. They are responsible for the quality as well as quantity of production. They supervise & guide the sub-ordinates. They are responsible for providing training to the workers. They prepare periodical reports about the performance of the workers.

• Classification of Managerial Skills Technical Skill : It is the ability of a manager to use the equipments , methods and techniques involved in performing specific tasks. Technical skill is required more at the lower level of management i.e. at the supervisory level. At higher levels, the technical skill is less important as managers can rely upon others for technical information.
Human Skill : The ability of a manager to work with, understand, and motivate people in the organization. It also involves the ability to build effective work teams. Human skills are important at all levels of management.
Conceptual Skill : This consists of the manager's ability to coordinate all organizational activities and varied interests involved in it. Conceptual skill is very important for top management in recognizing and evaluating multiple complex issues and understanding their relationships, engaging in planning and problem solving that profoundly affect the health service organization, and thinking globally about the organization and its environment.
