4 What is Management? Henri Fayol , who is known as the father of modern management defined management as, “Management is to forecast, to plan, to organize, to command, to coordinate and control activities of others.” F.W. Taylor , father of scientific management, “Management is an art of knowing what is to be done and seeing that it is done in the best possible manner.” Harold Koontz , defined management as, “Management is the art of getting things done through and with people in formally organized groups.” Henry Sisk defines "Management is the coordination of all resources through the process of planning, organizing, directing and controlling in order to attain stated goals."
5 Management Process or Functions Different experts have given definitions of the various functions of management differently. Henri Fayol has given POSDCORB as the functions of management, and it stands for Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Directing, Coordinating, Reporting & Budgeting. According to Luther Gulick, Decision Making, Organizing, Staffing, Planning, Controlling, Communicating & Directing are the functions of Management.

7 i.PLANNING Planning is the most fundamental of all management functions. Planning is deciding in advance, what is to be done, how is to be done, and where it is to be done, who will do it and how result are to be evaluated. Steps of Planning process are follows:- Define the task Identify Resources Consider Alternative Create the planning Work the plan Evaluate Importance of Planning:- Focus on attention on objective and creativity Reduce uncertainty and risk Provide a sense of direction Encourages innovation and creativity Helps in Co-ordination Provides efficiency in operation
8 ii.ORGANIZING Organizing provides structure to the organization. The process of deciding who within an organization will perform what tasks, where decisions will be made, who reports to whom, and how different parts of the organization will coordinate their activities to pursue a common goal. Steps of organizing process are follows:- Identification of activities:- First step is to determine the task that must be performed to achieve the established objective. Activities and job are building blocks of any organization. Grouping of activities:- The various activities are the grouped into department or divisions according to similarity and common purpose. Such grouping is necessary for the purpose of specialization, co-ordination and control. Delegation of authority:- Groups of activities or department are then allotted to different positions. Every positions is occupied by an individuals best suited for it. The assignments of activities creates responsibilities and ensure certainty of work performance. Assignment of Duties:- Every individuals is given the authority required to carry out the responsibility assigned to him. A chain of command is created through successive delegation og authority.
9 iii.STAFFING According to Koontz, O’Donnell and Heinz Weihrich - “ The management function of staffing is defined as filling positions in the organization structure through identifying workforce requirements, inventorying the people available, recruitment, selection, placement, promotion, appraisal, compensation and training of needed people. Staffing refers to putting the right person at right place, It provides competent people to fill various positions created out of the organizational structure. Staffing should be done very carefully. If the right person is not employed at right place, all the efforts go haywire. Importance of Staffing :- Training and development Effective Co-ordination Effective Recruitment & Placement Building effective human resources. Importance of Staffing function:- Optimum use of resources Enhances Corporates image Job satisfaction
10 iv.DIRECTING Directing aims at guiding the activities towards achieving a common goal. Directing leads to action. It is said to be process in which manager instruct, guide and oversee the performance of the worker to achieve predetermined goal. Element of Directing:- 1. Supervision :- It is function in which they assure that the work is being done as per plan or not. It act as a Planner, as a Manager, as a Guide/Leader, as a Mediator, as a Inspector. 2. Leadership :- It is the activity of influencing people to strive willingly for group objectivity. It works to lead people, influence people, command people & guide people. 3. Communication :- Leadership starts with Effective communication. It is clear, transparent and customized to the recipient. A good leader will take the time to find out which communication style and method work best for each team member. 4. Motivation :- It is a general inspiration process which gets the members of the team pull their weight effectively to give their loyalty to the group.
11 v.CONTROLLING Controlling is the process of monitoring performance against goals, intervening when goals are not met, and taking corrective action. Controlling is just as important as planning, staffing, organizing and directing. It sees to it that the right things happens, in the right way and at the right time . It helps ensure that objective and accomplishments are consists with one another throughout an organization. Importance of Controlling :- Guide to operation Policy Verification Managerial Accountability Employee Morale Psychological pressure Co-ordination in Action Process of Controlling:- Set Standard Measure performance Compare performance Take corrective action.
12 3.CONCULSION Management Process impacts the overall productivity and profitability of any business enterprise . It measures the efficiency of managers, other workers and the company rule and regulation, hence accelerating individual and company's progress.
