Managing Church Growth Principle 1: Purpose The natural tendency of a church (and older adult group) is to become increasingly self-centered and self-serving. Therefore its important for leaders to remind ourselves: What was/is Christ’s purpose? (State them) What is our individual purpose? (State them) What is our church’s (New Covenant Church Rumukwurushi ) purpose? (State them) What is our groups purpose? (State them)

Managing Church Growth Jesus Christ’s purpose on earth 1. To do the will of the Father- “For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.” John 6:38 2 To save sinners “The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.” 1 Tim 1:15 “And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” Mark 2:17 3. To bring light to the dark world “I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness.” John 12:46 4. To bear witness to the truth “Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”” John 18:37

Managing Church Growth Jesus Christ’s purpose on earth 5. To destroy the Devil and His Works “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil…” Hebrews 2:14 “Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8 6 To give Eternal life “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” John 6:51“Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”” John 18:37

Managing Church Growth Jesus Christ’s purpose on earth 7. To preach the Gospel “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor…but he said to them, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.”” Luke 4:18-19, 42; cf. Isaiah 61:1-2 8 To give Eternal life “I am the living bread that came down from heaven.

Managing Church Growth Jesus Christ’s purpose on earth 9. To reveal God’s Love ““For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

Managing Church Growth Believers purpose on earth 1. To go and preach the Gospel ‘’And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 2. Created for goods works “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God—not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.” Ephesians 2:8-10

Managing Church Growth Believers purpose on earth 3. Service in Humility   If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross. Philippians 2:1-8

Managing Church Growth Church purpose on earth 1. Evangelization of the world   “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19–20) “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God gave the increase…For we are God’s fellow workers” (1 Corinthians 3:6, 9). ‘’…Verse 18 -All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation 2 Corn 5:11-20 ‘’Verse 20-We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God’’ 2 Corn 5:20

Managing Church Growth Church purpose on earth 2. Exaltation of God   ‘’In order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory’’ Ephesians 1:12  ’’ But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light’’ Ipet 2:9 2. Edification of Saints “He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ” (Ephesians 4:11–15).
