INTRODUCTION Surface grinding is generally used for generating flat surfaces and by using special attachments tapered surfaces can also be obtained . By far these are the largest amount of grinding work done in most of the machine shops.

PRINCIPAL OF SURFACE GRINDING There are various types of surface grinding process but in each type the grinding wheel is rotated about it’s axis The work is reciprocated or rotated about with the help of machine table and two other types of feed are given which are called cross-feed (parallel to the width of work) and plug feed (parallel to the depth of work) .

Types of motions in Surface Grinding Rotational motion of grinding wheel Infeed motion Traverse motion

TYPES OF SURFACE GRINDING There are basically four types of surface grinding machines depending upon the spindle direction and the table motion Horizontal spindle and rotating table Vertical spindle and rotating table Horizontal spindle and reciprocating table Vertical spindle and reciprocating table

Horizontal spindle and rotating table In this machine the grinding wheel cuts on it’s periphery, while the spindle traverses horizontally from the edge to the centre of the table. Feed is accomplished by moving the table up into the wheel with the table moving in a rotary fashion Surface finish is a pattern of intersecting arcs

2. Vertical spindle and Rotating table In this type the machining surface is completely covered by the grinding wheel face . Both the work and the wheel rotate and feed into each other . The side face of the wheel does the grinding . This surface pattern created is of intersecting arcs .

3. Horizontal spindle and reciprocating table The table is The case of reciprocating table machines is generally moved by the hydraulic power. The wheel head is given a cross feed motion at the end of each table motion and grinding wheel cuts on its periphery. The grinding wheel traverses In a straight pattern that results in superior finish and high precision

In this machine the wheel should overtravel the workpiece at both the ends to prevent the grinding wheel from removing the metal at the same work spot during the table reversal This surface grinder is the most commonly used because of its high accuracy and fine surface finishes that is imparts.

Vertical spindle and Reciprocating table The grinding wheel in this machine is cylindrical and cuts on its side rather then it’s periphery . The work is fed by the reciprocating motion of the table. Generally the diameter of wheel is wider than the workpiece and hence no traverse feed is required

Advantages of surface grinding Provides high accuracy and surface finish for flat surfaces. Capable of Removing A significant amount of material in a short time. Versatile and suitable for grinding various material Including metal ceramics and composites. Suitable for both large and ssmall scale production , making it cost effective for various industries .

Disadvantages of surface grinding They are Primarily designed for Flat surfaces And may not be as suitable for complex shapes or counter when compared to other grinding machines Surface grinding is generally slow process especially when compared to abrasive machining Surface grinding is not efficient for high metal removal Rate Setup for surface grinding machine requires skilled operators
