ACTIVITY 1: LEARNING AREAS Directions: Form groups of three. Each group will be given 20 seconds to explore the learning corners in the classroom to jot down their observations.
LET’S ANALYZE!
At the end of the lesson, learners should be able to: a) identify the types of claims presented in a prose & non-prose text; b) construct claims about some issues in the society; and c) exemplify a sense of empathy and ethical responsibility during the formulation and discussion of claims OBJECTIVES :
Several studies showed that home economics (and similar) education was associated with higher levels of food knowledge among several age groups. Overall, substantial evidence suggests that home economics education brings about long-term changes in food knowledge. Further research is required to confirm and extend these findings (Worsley, et.al., 2016). Claims of Fact, Value, and Policy
A claim of fact makes an assertion about something that can be proved or disproved with factual evidence. Claims of fact usually answers a “what” question.
When determining whether something is a claim of fact, the following questions are useful: ➢ Is this issue related to a possible cause or effect? ➢ Is this statement true or false? How can its truthfulness be verified? ➢ Is this claim controversial or debatable?
ICT is good but using it to bully weak people is wrong . These technologies can involve text messages, picture/video clips, phone calls, emails, chat-rooms, websites/online fora, social network sites, etc. The term that has been used most often to describe aggressive conducts, including bullying, carried out through ICT is “cyberbullying” (Stefano, et.al., n.d.). Claims of Fact, Value, and Policy
A claim of value argues that something is good or bad, or right or wrong or that one thing is better than another thing. Claims of value attempt to explain how problems, situations, or issues ought to be valued .
To discover these explanations, you may ask the following questions: ➢ Which claims endorse what is good or right? ➢ What qualities should be considered good? Why? ➢ Which of these values contend with others? Which ones are more important, and why?
The welding area should always be equipped with a fire blanket and a well-stocked first aid kit. It should also be included in the policy that one person be trained in first aid to treat the minor injuries that may occur. All injuries, no matter how minor they may seem can become more serious if not properly treated by trained medical personnel ( NarcEducation , n.d.). Claims of Fact, Value, and Policy
A claim of policy argues that certain conditions should exist , or that something should or should not be done , in order to solve a problem. Claims of policy defend actionable plans , usually answer “how” questions.
The following questions will be useful in evaluating a claim of policy: ➢ Does the claim suggest a specific remedy to solve the problem? ➢ Is the policy clearly defined? ➢ Is the need for the policy established? ➢ Is the policy the best one available? For whom? ➢ How does the policy solve the problem
EXAMPLES: “ To combat plastic pollution, governments should mandate the use of biodegradable or recyclable materials in packaging and incentivize sustainable packaging practices.” “ For workplace gender equality, corporations should establish transparent pay scales, offer equal advancement opportunities regardless of gender, and provide comprehensive parental leave policies.”
ACTIVITY 3: Chair Up!
1. Vaping can lead to increased blood pressure, lung disease, and insulin resistance.
2. The basic keys to success are perseverance and discipline.
3. Studies have shown that exposure to violent media is a risk factor for violent behaviors.
4. The Career Support Network is an excellent resource for people who are considering a mid-life career change.
5. In order to ensure that graduates are competitive for top jobs in their fields, the college must put additional resources into its career services office and internship programs.
ACTIVITY 4: The Hall of “Claimer” Challenge
I HAVE LEARNED THAT _________________
Activity 5: Evaluation Childhood obesity in our country has more than tripled in the past 30 years. Today, one in six children in our country is obese. This is unacceptable. As parents, we try to provide a better future for our children, better than we’ve ever had. We need to stand up and do what we can. We can start by supporting the passing of the anti-junk food bill in schools and other child-friendly areas. -Adapted from Sample Op-Ed on Childhood Obesity Directions: Identify the type of claims presented in the paragraph. (Fact – underline / Value – encircle / Policy – rectangle)
Assignment: The “Write Stuff” Directions: Compose a short paragraph (minimum of 5 sentences) about one area of concern in your community. Then write a corresponding claim of fact, value and policy respectively. Present your claim and support it.
