Hubert & Helen BHAGWANSINGH

Hubert & Helen BHAGWANSINGH Helen Bhagwansingh, the "Iron Lady" of Trinidad and Tobago, earned her nickname through her assertive and dominant presence in the hardware industry. Born on October 7, 1940, to Daniel and Vilna Ramoutarsingh, Helen was the first of four children, whose grandparents were indentured servants who came to Trinidad. Her father moved the family to Marabella, where he opened a bicycle repair shop, and Helen left school at 11 to work full-time in the family business, Ramoutarsingh's Hardware. She managed the bicycle repair department efficiently and eventually took over the entire hardware until her marriage at 19 to Hubert Bhagwansingh, a radio technician. After marrying, Helen helped her father expand the business, purchasing a drive-in cinema in 1969, which she managed successfully until its sale in 1977. With the sale proceeds, Helen returned to the hardware business, buying an adjoining mangrove swamp from the Port Authority and transforming it into a thriving outlet. Her vision for the little hardware led to the establishment of Bhagwansingh's Hardware in Sea Lots. Despite challenges, including a disastrous fire, Helen rebuilt and expanded the business, eventually establishing additional locations in Chaguanas and Marabella. The Trincity branch, launched in 2007, became the largest hardware store in the English Caribbean.

HELEN AND HUBERT BHAGWANSINGH Helen diversified her portfolio, acquiring Dansteel and Centrin, and exploring other industries. Her remarkable achievements earned numerous awards, including Woman of the Millennium, induction into the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce Business Hall of Fame, the Order of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, an Honorary Doctor of Law degree from The University of the West Indies, National Icon for excelling in business and entrepreneurship, and induction into the Hall of Pioneers. Beyond her business acumen, Helen values family and is known for her generosity, supporting charities and establishing a Trust for Diabetes Education, Research and Prevention at The UWI. Her legacy continues to inspire future generations, solidifying her position as a pioneering female entrepreneur in Trinidad and Tobago. Throughout her 60-year marriage to Hubert, who passed away in 2019, Helen demonstrated courage, resilience, and business acumen, proving herself a true leader in her industry and community. Today, Bhagwansingh's Hardware remains a household name, with Helen's children continuing the family tradition, and her philanthropic efforts leaving a lasting impact on Trinidad and Tobago.
