ART OF GEL
PRINTING
Josie Lewis
Gel printing is a versatile and creative technique
that allows artists to produce beautiful, layered
prints with ease. Whether you're new to this art
form or looking to refine your skills, here's a
simple guide to get you started.
Materials You'll Need:
Gel Plate: The surface you'll print on, available in various sizes.
Acrylic Paint: Choose colors that suit your project.
Brayer: A roller tool for spreading paint on the gel plate.
Paper: For transferring the print, any type of paper can be
used, but smoother surfaces work best.
Stencils and Textures: Items like leaves, fabric, or lace to
create patterns.
1. Prepare Your Workspace: Lay down some protective covering for your work surface,
as gel printing can get messy. Have your materials ready and within reach.
2. Apply Paint to the Gel Plate: Squeeze a small amount of acrylic paint onto the gel
plate. Use the brayer to roll the paint out evenly across the surface. You can mix colors
directly on the plate for a blended effect.
3.Add Texture: Before the paint dries, press stencils, leaves, or textured objects into the
paint. This will lift some paint off the plate, creating interesting patterns and designs.
Steps to Gel Print:
4. Transfer the Print: Place a sheet of paper over the gel plate
and press down firmly, ensuring the entire surface makes
contact. Rub the back of the paper to help transfer the paint.
5. Reveal Your Print: Carefully lift the paper off the gel plate to
reveal your print. Each print will be unique, and you can
experiment with different layers, colors, and textures.
6. Experiment: Try layering prints by adding more paint and
repeating the process. You can create depth and complexity by
building up multiple layers.
Use a Light Touch: When pressing textures into the paint, a
gentle touch is often more effective.
Clean Your Gel Plate: Wipe the gel plate clean between prints
to avoid unwanted color mixing.
Experiment with Different Papers: Different types of paper
will give you varied results, so don’t be afraid to try something
new.
