SEMICONDUCTOR MATERIALS Presented by Denny Hardiyanto , S.T., M.Eng . 2 nd Meeting Analog Electronic Course
Let,s Warm Up Review 1 st Meeting Last meeting, we learned about Electronic components. Could you mention 3 of the electronic components? Could you mention, the function of diode?
Good Job! The Answer is.. 1. Resistor, Diode, Transistor, Regulator, and etc. 2. The function of Diode are: as rectifier, voltage stabilizer, and etc
Review… There are 3 types of material: Conductor is a material that can conduct electricity . For Example: Iron, Copper, Gold Insulator is a material that does not conduct electricity . For example: Plastic, glass, mika , and the others Semiconductor is materials with electrical conductivity that is intermediate between electrical insulators and electrical conductors. For example: Silicon, Germanium, Carbon
Learning Outcomes: Students can explain the meaning of semiconductor materials Students can understand and explain the atomic structure of semiconductors Students can explain of N-type and P-type semiconductor materials
Definition of Semiconductor 6
Semiconductor benefits 7
Why, these materials can be classificate into conductor, insulator, or semiconductor?? ??
Because… ATOM and Electron Bond https://oddyazis.blogspot.com/2016/09/kekuatan-sebuah-atom.html
The Concept of an Insulator Materials Slide 10 In insulating materials, electrons are tightly bound so that it takes a lot of energy to release them from their orbits
Slide 11 Conducting materials have electrons that are not tightly bound in their orbits. Small energy can make these electrons loose and move from one atom to another Electrons in an Conductor
If there is no energy and in pure state conditions, the semiconductor material is an insulator Slide 12 Insulator Semiconductor
Free electrons If there is heat energy from the fire, the electrons are able to break the bonds and move into free electrons Slide 13 Electrons Process in Semiconductor
Hole The loss of a valence electron will leave a vacancy in the valence orbit namely hole . Slide 14 Electrons Process in Semiconductor
Hole is like a positive charge because it will attract and capture free electrons. When an electron approaches a hole and is attracted into it, what is known as recombination. Slide 15 Electrons Process in Semiconductor
Increased Heat The increased heat will increase the number of free electrons and holes. It makes semiconductor materials quickly become conductors Slide 16 Process of Semiconductor Materials Become Conductor
The example of Semiconductor in Periodic Table
Summarize There are 3 types of materials in electronics , namely: Conductor, Insulator and Semiconductor. Semiconductor is able to change properties when the temperature changes.
