According to Anderson (1998) recount is a piece of text that retells events aimed to give the audience a description of what happened, when it happened and why it occurred. Recount text can be factual information, such as a new story or procedural information, telling a family holiday, etc The purpose of Recount Text The purpose of recount text is to inform or to entertain the reader about events or experiences that happened in the past. The generic Structure Orientation It gives the readers the background information needed to understand the text, such as who was involved, where the event took place, and when it happened. b) Events It describes series of events that happened in the past and the events are presented in a chronological sequence. c) Re-orientation It is optional. Stating personal comment of the writer about the event or what happened in the end. The Language Feature of Recount Text The language features of the recount text are as follows: a) Using the simple past tense, past continuous tense, past perfect tense, and past perfect continuous tense. b) Using temporal sequence, e.g. On Saturday. On Monday, On Sunday c) Frequent use is made of words which link events in time, such as next,later , when, then, after, before, first, at the same time, as soon as, etc. d) Focus on a specific participant, e.g. I (the writer), we e) Using the conjunctions, such as: then, before, after, etc. f) Using an action verb, e.g. went, stayed.
