What is Fashion?
•fashion is the particular style that is
popular at a given time
•Anything that is “in” is part of current
fashion

Fashion Terms
•Style
•Characteristics that distinguish one
particular item of clothing from another
•Examples:
•Jeans, A-line skirt, raglan or kimono
sleeves

•Classic
•Styles that become classics are usually simpler
and less innovative than others
•Navy blue blazer is a classic
•Blue jeans, tuxedos, cardigans, sweaters
•Polo shirts, turtleneck sweaters
•Tailored shirts

•Fad
•Fashion that is very popular for only a short time
•Colors like mauve, chartreuse
•Short miniskirts, low slung baggy pants

•Some fads return when a new generation
discovers them
•Fads help teens express sense of
belonging and personality

Avant-Garde
•French expression that means ahead of
fashion
•Daring and unconventional
•“far out”, don’t appeal to most people
•Call attention to wearer

•Brings backs styles of an earlier time
•V neck sweaters, wrap dresses, pointed
pumps

•Introduction stage
•Born when it’s worn for the first time
•Models, celebrities, etc
•Introduced in small quantities at high
prices

•Interest in fashion builds and people
gradually accept it
•Variations are sold at lower prices

•Many people wear the fashion
•Peaks in popularity
•Large quantities at prices most can afford

•People tire of style
•Continue to wear it but sales decline

•Basic styles of clothes and accessories
remain the same, certain details change
•Skirt lengths go up and down
•Jacket lapels are narrow or wide

occasion
•During the 1920’s, hems rose to the knees
•During the 1930’s they fell to the calf
