About This Presentation

Studying music has many positive effects including improving math skills. Watch and see how!

Math and MusicMath and Music
nHow studying music raises math scores. How studying music raises math scores.

Why studying music raises math scores.
Musical and spatial processing centers in the brain are
proximal or overlapping and hence linked not distinct.
Authentic and comprehensive training in making
music and reading music notation increases further
association between music and math reasoning.
Learning in and through music can catalyze cognitive
skills and social-emotional development across
disciplines.

All three areas of the triune
brain are activated with music.
•The Sensorimotor
(reptilian ) brain:
•The Emotional-cognitive
(limbic structure) brain:
•The Neocortex
(intellectual or thinking) brain:

The Sensorimotor
(reptilian ) brain:
Feels music as vibration, not as
sound, through nerve endings;
similar to standing in front of
loud stereo speakers.
Listening to music can slow down
or speed up the heart rate.

The Emotional-cognitive
(limbic structure) brain:
Reacts emotionally to music.
Music’s emotional content enhances
learning and retention.

The Neocortex (intellectual
or thinking) brain:
Organizes/intellectualizes
sounds from the reptilian and
limbic systems.
Listening to music can activate
brain waves of higher order
thinking.

Learning to make music and read music
notation causes LONG TERM
improvements in the underlying neural
circuitry of the brain.
These brain enhancements occur in non-
auditory areas of the brain that are not
exclusive to music processing.

Piano lessons & notation prepares
students for math & engineering
Piano lessons and music notation reading
develop temporal-spatial reasoning skills,
enabling better performance in
mathematics and engineering.
Math, engineering, piano playing, &
notation reading all require students to
combine planning, designing and
organizing.

Many areas of the brain are used at
once during musical performance.

Auditory, Visual, Tactile, and Kinesthetic areas

Music is processed by
many brain systems
nMusic making processes are engaged in
a distributed manner through out the
brain.
nThere is no single "music center" in the
brain.
nMusic making processes occur on
BOTH SIDES of the brain
simultaneously.

In musicians who started their training
in early childhood, the corpus callosum
is up to 15% larger.
A professional musician's auditory
cortex has 130% more gray matter than
that of non-musicians.
Musicians have a larger
corpus callosum.

The Corpus CallosumThe Corpus Callosum
Your brain is divided in two half
globes or hemispheres by the
Longitudinal fissure. The two halves
resemble the two halves of a walnut.
At the base of the Longitudinal fissure a
thick bundle of nerve fibers, the corpus
callosum, connects the two halves. The
callosum acts as a bridge that allows
one hemisphere to call on the other to
accomplish a task.

Are you in your right mind?
Nerve fibers cross the
longitudinal fissure
causing the left
hemisphere to control
the right half of the body,
and vice-versa,
EXCEPT in HEARING.
Although the right and left hemispheres seem to be a mirror
image of one another, there are important functional distinctions.
In most people, for example, the areas that control speech are
located in the left hemisphere, while areas that govern spatial
perceptions reside in the right hemisphere.

"Music will not only help us understand
how we think, reason, and create, but will
enable us to learn how to bring each
child's potential to its highest level."
