4. Using Rations to Compare Two Quantities Example 1 There are 4 strawberries and 5 oranges The ratio of number of strawberries to the number of oranges is 4 : 5 We read 4 : 5 as 4 to 5 . The ratio of the number of oranges to the number of strawberries is 5 : 4 We read 5 : 4

5. Example 2 Aras bought 2 packs of burgers and 3 pack of cupcakes. The ratio of the number of burgers to the number of cupcakes is 2 : 3 The ratio of the number of cupcakes to the number of burgers is 3 : 2 The number of items in each pack is the same. Each pack represents one unit. A ratio may not give the actual number burger and cupcakes.

6. Example 3 Ruzi buys 2 kg of chicken and 9 kg of mutton . The ratio of the mass of chicken to the mass of mutton is 2 : 9 The ratio of the mass of mutton to the mass of chicken is 9 : 2 To compare the masses, they must be in the same unit. However, we do not include the unit in the ratio.
