DENTAL CARIES Dental caries is an irreversible microbial disease of the calcified tissues of the teeth, characterized by demineralization of the inorganic portion and destruction of the organic substance of the tooth, which often leads to cavitations. The word caries is derived from the Latin word meaning ‘rot’ or ‘decay ’.

Radiation Caries The development of rampant caries in patients undergoing radiation therapy in the head and neck region is referred to as radiation caries. It differs from the other types of caries by involving the cusp tips, incisal edges and the cervical areas. Rate of progression is faster when compared to the former.

Etiology of Dental Caries Early theories Legend of worms. Endogenous theories : Caries is produced by internal action of acids and corroding humors and an imbalance in these humors resulted in disease. Chemical theory : ‘ chymal agent’ responsible for caries. Parasitic theory.

Miller’s chemoparasitic theory or The Acidogenic Theory : Caries is caused by acids produced by microorganisms of mouth. THE PROTEOLYTIC THEORY : The organic portion of the tooth is the initial path of entry for micro organism.

AMELOBLASTOMA

DEFINITION “branch of dentistry which, in the interest of justice, deals with the proper handling and examination of dental evidence, and with the proper evaluation and presentation of dental findings” Father of Forensic Odontology Dr. OSCAR AMOEDA

SEX DETERMINATION BY DNA ANALYSIS From enamel protein [ Amelogenin ]:- Amelogenin [AMEL] – Major matrix proteins secreted by the ameloblasts of the enamel AMELgene located on X & Y – chromosomes in humans. Females(XX) have two identical AMEL genes and males (XY)have two non-identical AMEL gene

THIRD MOLARS IN AGE ESTIMATION :- Third molar is a valuable indicator for age in 16-22 year old age group. The development of third molar is impotant in determining whether an individual is juvenile or an adult. If a ll four third molars are calcified, the chances of the individual being 18yrs old is 96.3% in males & 95.1% in females
