At the end of this lesson, you should be able to note types of context clues (restatement, definition, synonyms, antonyms) used for a given word or expression (EN9V-Ig-i-12.3) .

How can we find clues in identifying unfamiliar words?
With your group, analyze the following paragraph. Identify unfamiliar words you see within the paragraph and try to define each word. Once, my sister had a hankering for sweets. She said that she does not like ice cream or chocolate. I told her that we do not have an allocation for sweets at the moment, so she needs to suppress it for a while. All of a sudden, she went berserk and threw her pillows to my direction. I had no choice but to buy her a cheesecake.
How did you know the meaning of the unfamiliar words? What hints did you get to define these words? Share your insights in class.
hankering (noun) – a strong desire for something Pregnant women often have a hankering for various types of food. suppress (verb) – stop or refrain It is not advisable to suppress one’s feelings. berserk (adjective) – feeling or showing emotional disturbance or great excitement The dog went berserk after being presented with a new toy. befuddled (adjective) – confused The unusual message Jamie received from her sister left her befuddled . contract (verb) – reduce to a smaller size The fitness trainer explained to us how muscles contract . Context clues are surrounding words, phrases, or sentences that lead to the understanding of an unfamiliar word. But, context clues cannot be used to get the exact definition of an unfamiliar word.
Restatement involves other ways of writing a new word Types of Context Clues Examples: Jason is immune to the disease. That is, his immune system can resist the disease. I admit that I am a nocturnal person. In other words, I am active during the night.
Synonym is a word or phrase that is similar to the meaning of another word. Types of Context Clues Examples: My little brother is such a nuisance . Even my dog thinks he is annoying. What the president did was outrageous . It was really bad in so many ways.
Antonym is another word or phrase that means the opposite of or is in contrast with a word. Types of Context Clues Examples: Even if you think my opponent tomorrow is a formidable player, for me, he is unthreatening. No matter how you encourage me to be ecstatic , I am still depressed over what happened.
Identify the type of context clue shown in each sentence below. _______________1. Karen’s project is feasible even though you think it is impossible. _______________2. Online gaming is prevalent these days. Its entertainment factor makes it so popular. _______________3. We need to look for a tangible object, something that is touchable.

Infer the meaning of the underlined words using context clues. Then, identify the type of context clues, and use each word in a sentence. The decision of the panel to pass you was unanimous . That is, all the panel members agreed. Embroidery refers to the art of sewing a design on cloth. The design of our project is undulating . But our teacher asked us to make it flat and plain.
We can no t allow the boss to jeopardize the party. He already threatened to cancel the party before. The office will take punitive action against the bullies. In other words, the administration will give punishment to those who like to bully other students.
In what ways can you make your friends read a novel that other people would not read because of the presence of unfamiliar words? Values Integration
Divide the class into four groups. Choose five words that are likely to be unfamiliar to others. 1st Group – Provide context clues of the words using definitions. 2nd Group – Provide context clues of the words using restatements. 3rd Group – Provide context clues of the words using synonyms. 4th Group – Provide context clues of the words using antonyms. The other groups will then infer the meanings of the unfamiliar words using the context clues given.
Revisit a novel, story, or news article that you recently read. Identify words and their context clues that the author provided. Identify the types of context clues provided. Use the words that you found in your own sentences. Assignment
