Objectives Describe what it means to measure; Describe the two standard systems of measure.
Which is which? Which is heavier? Which is larger?
What do you think is this?
What is measurement? is a process of a comparing an unknown quantity to a standard known quantity. Measurement attributes can be SPATIAL ( length, area, and volume ), PHYSICAL ( mass/weight and temperature ) and have NO PHYSICAL CONNECTION ( time )
Which is which? Which is heavier? Which is larger? Attributes: Weight – 6,350 kg 1,360 kg Length – 3 – 5 m 5 – 6 m (body)
Nonstandard Units of Measure The earliest recorded uniform systems of measurement was originated during the 3rd and 4th millennium BC among the Ancient Egyptians. They needed measurement for the purpose of agriculture, construction and trade. They used their body parts to measure things and time. This is what we called NONSTANDARD UNITS OF MEASUREMENT.
What do you think is this? Nonstandard Units of Measurement
NONSTANDARD UNITS OF MEASURE Example: 1. PALM - I t is the width of the hand(excluding the thumb)
NONSTANDARD UNITS OF MEASURE Example: 2. HAND SPAN -When you spread your fingers apart, the distance from the tip of the little finger to the tip o f the thumb is called hand span
NONSTANDARD UNITS OF MEASURE 3. CUBIT -It is the length of the forearm from elbow to the tip of the middle finger.
NONSTANDARD UNITS OF MEASURE Example: 4. DIGIT -It is the thickness of the index finger.
NONSTANDARD UNITS OF MEASURE Example: 5. FOOT It is basically the length of the human foot.
NONSTANDARD UNITS OF MEASURE Example: 6. PACE -It is the distance o f one full step.
Standard Units of Measure ENGLISH SYSTEM METRIC SYSTEM Commonly used in United States Used commonly all around the world. Conversion requires memorization Conversion is easy by using the power of 10 Includes: inch, foot, mile, pound, gallon, etc , Includes: meter, gram, liter, etc. (prefix - kilo, centi, milli, deci, etc.)
Standard Units of Measure COMMON LENGTH MEASUREMENT (Metric System Chart) 1 centimeter (cm) = 10 millimeters (mm) 1 decimeter ( dm ) = 10 centimeters (cm) 1 meter (m) = 10 decimeters ( dm ) 1 meter (m) = 100 centimeters (cm) 1 decameter (dam) = 10 meters (m) 1 hectometer ( hm ) = 100 meters (m) 1 kilometer (km) = 1000 meters (m)
