Measurement of INTELLIGENCE

Intelligence is not a thing. Its only an idea, an abstraction. Its measurement is not possible in the same way as we measure a piece of cloth or temperature of our body. So, we measure intelligence of an individual with the help of intelligence test.

The first attempt to measure intelligence was made by Alfred Binet with the help of his friend Simon .The scale they made is known as Binet Simon Scale . Binet observed that as children advance in age, the difficulty level of the tasks they can perform also increases.

The Concept of Mental Age Binet conceived the idea of M ental Age(MA) to measure intelligence. Tests were made for different age levels. If a test was passed by 60-90% of children of a given age , Binet accepted it for that age level. A child who successfully perform all the tasks acceptable for the five year old child is taken to have a mental age of five, whatever his Chronological Age (CA) may be.

Intalligence Quotient Measurement of intelligence in terms of MA raised many problems. To make the comparison easy Stern devised the concept of Intelligence Quotient, popularly known as IQ. The intelligence quotient is an index of the child’s relative level of brightness as compared with the other children of his age. IQ is the ratio between the MA and the CA. It is obtained by dividing the mental age

by the chronological age and multiplying by 100. ie : IQ= MA ×100 CA

Distribution of IQ Garret has classified people according to their IQ. IQ Classification 140 and above Very superior(gifted)(1.5%) 120 to 139 Superior 110 to 119 Bright 90 to 109 Average or Normal (48% approximately) 80 to 89 Dull or Backward 70 to 79 Very Dull(Border line) 0 to 69 Feeble minded(mentally retarded)
