Measures of Position for Ungrouped Data

Have you ever wondered how to divide data into equal parts to understand its distribution better? Why do we have to divide the set of data? What is its significance?

Measures of Position for Ungrouped Data Measures of Positions: Quartile Decile Percentile

The Quartile for Ungrouped Data Quartiles are the score points which divide a distribution into four equal parts. Q 1 – is called the lower quartile Q 2 – is called the median Q 3 – is called the upper quartile Q 1 Q 2 Q 3

The Quartile for Ungrouped Data 25% of the data has a value Q 1 50% of the data has a value or Q 2 75% of the data has a value Q 3

The Quartile for Ungrouped Data Example: The owner of a coffee shop recorded the number of customers who came into his café each hour in a day. The results were 14, 10, 12, 9, 17, 5, 8, 9, 14, 10, and 11. Find the lower quartile and upper quartile of the data.

Solution: In ascending order, the data are 5, 8, 9, 9, 10, 10, 11, 12, 14, 14, 17 The least value in the data is 5 and the greatest value in the data is 17. The middle value in the data is 10.

The lower quartile is the value that is between the middle value and the least value in the data set. So, the lower quartile is 9. The upper quartile is the value that is between the middle value and the greatest value in the data set. So, the upper quartile is 14.

Solve on the board: Consider the following set of data: 16, 16, 17, 21, 28, 31, 39, and 39. Look for its Q 1 , Q 2 , and Q 3 .

Assessment: 1. Identify the first and third quartiles for the following set of numbers. {11, 14, 9, 2, 27, 26, 5, 8, 19, 10, 12, 6} 2. Determine Q 1 , Q 2 , and Q 3 from the following list: {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27}

Homework: Salesperson who lands in the top quartile (75%) of the average customer satisfaction ratings at the end of the year receive a bonus. Among the set of average ratings below, what is the cutoff for receiving the bonus? {98, 55, 67, 88, 85, 91, 83, 65, 77, 83}
