M echanical waves By: Imad darwish

How are mechanical waves categorized? Waves are energy disturbances that move through mediums or a vacuum without transferring matter. They have different types, including mechanical and electromagnetic waves. Nature

Types Transverse Waves: are waves, where the particles of the medium move perpendicular to the direction of the wave. Waves on a string or electromagnetic waves are examples of transverse waves. Longitudinal Waves : are waves, where the particles of the medium move parallel to the direction of the wave. Sound waves are an example of longitudinal waves .

Characteristics Amplitude: The maximum displacement of a particle from its equilibrium position as the wave passes through. Wavelength: The distance between two consecutive points that are in phase in the wave Frequency: The number of complete oscillations or cycles of the wave per unit time, typically measured in hertz (Hz). Speed: The rate at which a wave travels through a medium.

Applications in real life Sound Waves: Communication: Sound waves allow us to communicate through speech, music, and other audio signals. When you speak into a microphone, sound waves are generated and transmitted to the receiver. Music and Entertainment: Musical instruments, speakers, and headphones all rely on sound waves for producing and transmitting sound. Sonar Systems: Sonar technology uses sound waves underwater for navigation, mapping, and detecting objects (used in submarines and fishing vessels). Microwaves: Cooking: Microwave ovens use microwaves to heat food by exciting water molecules. X-rays: Medical Imaging: X-rays are widely used for diagnostic imaging (e.g., detecting fractures, tumors, and dental issues). Security Scanning: X-ray scanners at airports and other security checkpoints help detect hidden objects.
