Media's Role in Shaping Values and Culture

"What's Normal?" (5 minutes) Write down or post 3 things they consider "normal" (e.g., eating dinner together, wearing certain brands of clothes, valuing a college degree ). Where they learned these things?

Culture: Shared values, beliefs, behaviors , and material objects that form a people's way of life. Define Key Terms

Values: Culturally defined standards that people use to decide what is desirable, good, and beautiful.

A norm is an unwritten rule of behavior or conduct that is shared by members of a social group or society. In the context of the Media and Information Literacy lesson you were discussing, norms are the unspoken expectations about how people should act, what they should believe, or what is considered acceptable in a given situation.

Media as Agent of Socialization: Explain that media is a powerful entity that teaches us how to behave and what to believe, right alongside family and school.

core Activity: Decoding Values Media Analysis Setup: Decoding- We're not just watching media; we're breaking down the messages embedded in it. Advertisements and Narrative Media (TV/Film).

Divide the class into small groups (4-5 students). Group A (Advertisements): A local commercial promoting a beauty product or a fast-food chain. Group B (Narrative Media): A short clip from a popular Filipino teleserye, reality show, or social media drama.

Group 1

Group 2

Analysis Questions (Handout): Each group must answer: What Value is being promoted? (e.g., Familial obedience, Consumerism, Material success, Light skin as beautiful, Gender roles ). What Norm (unwritten rule of behavior ) is being reinforced? What is the potential Social Effect if everyone believes this message?

Group Reporting (5 minutes) Have one representative from each group briefly share their most significant findings and the value they decoded.

Wrap-up & Reflection The Counter-Culture Challenge Discussion: "Does media always promote tradition, or can it challenge norms?" Present a counter-example (e.g., a viral post promoting body positivity, an indie film tackling social injustice, or a news report exposing corruption). Point: Media is a double-edged sword—it can reinforce old ideas and drive new social change.

generalization Culture: Shared values, beliefs, behaviors , and material objects that form a people's way of life. Values: Culturally defined standards that people use to decide what is desirable, good, and beautiful. Media as Agent of Socialization: Explain that media is a powerful entity that teaches us how to behave and what to believe, right alongside family and school. Critical consumption —watching/reading/listening not just for entertainment, but for messages .

On a ¼ sheet of paper , complete the following sentence: "Because of media, I believe that [Value/Norm] is important, but I will start to question it by [Specific Action]."
