MEDIA AND INFORMATION LANGUAGES

MEDIA -the communication outlets or tools used to store and deliver information or data. --Wikipedia

LANGUAGE used as a medium for communication; the system of words or signs to express thoughts.

MEDIA LANGUAGES- the way in which a text is constructed to create meaning for a reader or viewer of the text.

 codes, conventions, formats, symbols and narrative structures that indicate the meaning of media messages to an audience.

Convention

in the media context, refers to a standard or norm that acts as a rule governing behavior.

Media language conveys meaning through signs and symbols.

codes are systems of signs that when put together create meaning.

TYPES OF CODES symbolic written technical

1. SYMBOLIC CODES- iconic symbols that are easily understood Example: Red roses may convey love & romance

2. WRITTEN CODES- use of language style and textual layout (headline, captions, speech bubble,etc .)

3. Technical codes include sound, camera angles, types of shots and lighting.

Messages

the information sent from a source to a receiver.

Audience- the group of consumers for whom a media message was constructed as well as anyone else who exposed to the message.

Producers- people engaged in the process of creating and putting together media content to make a finished media product.
