What is klebsilla pneumoniae?
1.Klebsilla pneumoniae is a Gram negative,
encapsulated, non motile bacterium found in the
environment and has been associated with pneumoniae
in patients population with alcohol use disorder or
diabetes mellitus.

Introduction
■The genus klebsilla was named after the German bacteriologists Edwin klebs .
■ It naturally occurs in the soil , and about 30 % Of strains can fix nitrogen in
anaerobic conditions.
■ It is found in normal flora of the mouth , skin and intestines ,it can cause
destructive changes to human and animals lungs and may resulting in bloody
sputum.
■In recent years, klebsilla species have become important pathogen in nosocomial
infection.
■As a free Living diazotroph, in nitrogen fixation system has been much studied, and
is agricultural intrest
■ as K.pneumoniae has been Demonstration to increase crop yields in agricultural
conditions.

Morphology
Klebsilla pneumoniae is a Gram – Negative
■Non _ motile
■Encapsulated
■Rod shaped bacteria
■3 m Length x 0.5 m width
■Lactose fermenting
■Faculative anaerobic
Possess a polysaccharides Capsule

Main symptoms of pneumoniae

Cultural characters:
■Facultative anaerobic
■Non fastidious
■Optimum temperture 37C°
■On Mocconkey agar. Pink colonies ( LF), Large mucoid
colonies,moist and high convex.
■On CLED : yellow colonies (LF), Large mucoid colonies,
moist and high convex.

Culture
■ Facultative anaerobic grows well at 37°C
■On mac conkey agar
■ Pink,mucoid and 3 to 4mm in diameter .
■On blood agar:
■White ,mucoid and 3 to 4 mm in diameter with gamma
hemolysis.

Culture

Disease caused by klebsilla:
■Urinary tract infection
■ Pneumoniae
■Specticaemia
■Nosocomial infections
■Soft tissue infections

Pathogenesis
■Klebsilla infection are prominent individual who have diabetes or
who suffer from alcoholism due to weekend immune response.
■Klebsilla pneumoniae is present in the respiratory tract and feces of
about 5% of normal individuals
■It causes small proportion (~1% of bacterial pneumonias.
■K. pneumoniae can produce extensive hemorrhagic necrotizing
consolidation of lungs
■Symptoms associated included sudden onset, high fever, jelly like
sputum shortness,of breath and coughing and common

Pathogenesis
■If introduced into the blood stream,k. Pneumoniae has the capability of
causing meningitis,which affect the CNS
■Symptoms include sharp head pain, nausea, dizziness and impaired
memory
■It produce urinary tract infection alongside bacteremia.
■An alarming issue and even more common infection Originating from
K.Pneumoniae and Nosocomial infections .

Laboratory Diagnosis
■ Specimens
■ Sputum
■ Urine
■ Pus
■ CSF
■ Direct microscopy
■ By simply gram staining a sputum sample obtained from patients
could lead one to diagnose K. Pneumoniae.

Treatment
■ Drugs like Aminoglycosides, polymyxins,
Tigecycline,Fosfomycin, Temocillin are used for treatment .
■ Antibiotics for klebsilla pneumoniae:
■Cefotaxime (claforan)
■Ciprofloxacin _ is the best antibiotic to inhibit the growth of
Klebsilla pneumoniae non ESBL and klebsilla pneumoniae
ESBL compared to cotrimoxazole and doxycycline

Transmission
■Klebsilla pneumoniae infections can transmitted to:
■Respiratory tract by ventilator which causes pneumoniae.
■Blood by sharp materials and cause an infection in the
bloodstream.
■Urinary tract by cathaters and causes UTIs.

Biochemical reactions
■Biochemical test K . Pneumoniae
■Catalase +
■Triple sugar agar TSI +
■Indole production _
■Methyl red _
■Urease +
■Voges proskauer +
■H2S _
■Simmons citrate +

Klebsilla pneumoniae symptoms
■ Klebsilla pneumoniae enters the respiratory tract,it can lead to bacterial
pneumoniae,or an infections of the Lungs.
■Symptoms includes:
■ Chest pain when you breathe or cough,
■Fever and chills,
■Shortness of breath,
■Fatigue,
■ A cough that may produce phlegm,
■It may change in mental awareness.

What is the scientific classification of
Klebsilla pneumoniae?
■Class _ gammaproteobacteria
■Order _ Enterobacterales
■Family _ Enterobacteriaceae
■Genus _ klebsilla Trevisan 1885

Can klebsilla cause infertility?
■Infection with klebsilla ssp . Causes a variety of syndromes in livestock,
the most important being endometritis, infertility and abortion in mares,
mastitis in cows and sows, and neonatal septicaemia, particularly in foals.
■ Is klebsilla pneumoniae harmful?
■ But klebsilla pneumoniae can be dangerous if they get into other parts
of your body, especially if your already sick, they can turn into
“superbugs” that are very hard to fight with antibiotics.
■The Germs can give you pneumoniae, infect your wound or blood and
causes other serious problems.
