audience sees a plethora of people manipulating Leonard such as Teddy, Natalie and Burt. The

After close reading the short story Memento Mori by Jonathan Nolan I have come to the conclusion
that Romanticism is prevalent in the story. After the attack that killed Earl's wife and injured Earl's
brain, he lost his ability to make new memories and so he was controlled and confined by other
people saying what they are doing is for his own good. Earl was trying to find his place in the
universe, as every day he had to wake up and relearn where he is and what he is doing. He was a
man driven by emotion, he had lots of hate and seemed pretty helpless but he also has a sense of

eventually turned into this movie. The main character in the movie is Leonard, an ex–insurance
investigator who suffers from anterograde amnesia after a horrible incident. Throughout the film

Death A common theme in Muriel Spark's novels is death. This theme is especially prevalent in the
novels, Memento Mori and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. In Memento Mori, Spark introduces
many older characters some of which do not want to recognize that death is close. These older
people get phone calls that remind them that they will eventually die. On the contrary, The Prime of
Miss Jean Brodie introduces young characters. Remembering death is not the main theme of this

They are different because of the way that they die. Dame Lettie dies from being beaten to death and
Mary dies from a hotel fire. However, these deaths are similar because they are slow and torturous
deaths. Spark makes them seem quick because she uses short phrases for example in Brodie she
says, "Stumbled and died" and in Memento Mori she says, "Battered her to death". These are short
phrases that make the action and death seem quick and painless, but in reality, they are not quick and
painless at all. It takes about 10–15 minutes to die from smoke inhalation, so Mary suffered for a
while before she died which is not described in the novel. And for being beaten to death, the time it
took to die would depend on where Dame Lettie was hit, but either way it is still painful and
torturous. Also, another similarity is how Spark tells their ages. In Brodie, Spark mentions a few
sentences earlier that Mary, "lived into her twenty–fourth year" (13). And in Memento Mori Spark
says for Dame Lettie, "It was her eighty first year" (182). Spark does not say she was 24 years old or

Memento In the beginning of the movie Memento you meet a guy named Leonard who is facing a
dilemma with his memory loss and trying to find his wife's killer. Through the movie he meets many
new characters that take part impacting his life in ways that he didn't expect. Leonard, however has
developed ways of dealing with his dilemma through methods of photos, and tattoos, but
unfortunately, he is in the same time loop dealing with the same dilemma over and over again.
Throughout the movie Leonard faces many difficulties one of which is his short–term memory loss.
One of the problems is that he cannot make any new memories. However, he can remember
everything before his accident. During a flashback we witness one of the brief moments that lead up
to his condition. Not to mention he cannot trust himself or other people. At one point in his life he
trusted his wife to no ends, and she took advantage of it and tried to help him to regain his memory.
