Moebius Syndrome

Youth may experience bullying and feel
isolated when outside the home. Being
socially maligned may increase the
chances for that child to develop
anxiety, suicidal ideation and/or
depression.
Source: Medline Plus
This rare congenital condition is caused by the
underdevelopment of facial nerves. Children could
experience facial abnormalities, issues with swallowing,
speech, and chewing. Though the exact number is
unknown, Researchers estimate that the condition affects
1 in 50,000 to 1 in 500,000 newborns.

What is Mental Health?

Mental health includes our emotional,
psychological, and social well-being. It affects
how we think, feel, and act, and helps
determine how we handle stress, relate to
others, and make choices. Some common
mental health disorders are:
●Anxiety
●Depression
●Suicidal Ideation
●Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
●Self Injurious Behavior

What is Youth Mental
Health First Aid?

Youth Mental Health First Aid is an early
intervention, which teaches adults how to
recognize the signs and symptoms that
suggest a potential mental health challenge,
how to listen nonjudgmentally and give
reassurance to a youth who may be
experiencing a mental health challenge, and
how to refer a person to appropriate
professional support and services.

Precipitating Factors

There has been a dramatic increase in youth suffering from some
form of mental health challenge. Nationally we have inadequate
amounts of mental health providers. National statistics show
that in most states there is 1 mental health provider to every 350
youth. In some states, like Alabama, the ratio changes
significantly. There is only 1 mental health provider for every 850
youth. Children from low income households are less likely to
receive treatment.

ALGEE Model

ALGEE is a non linear,
step-by-step action plan to
use when providing support
to someone who may be
experiencing a distressing
situation, just as you would
if you were administering
first aid for a fall. This model
was developed by MHFA
and The National Council
for Mental Wellbeing.

Talking About It

03

What is the relationship
between bullying and mental
illness?

Bullying can cause feelings of rejection, exclusion, isolation, low
self-esteem, and some individuals can develop depression and
anxiety as a result. In some cases it can even develop into Acute
Stress Disorder or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

It is important to be aware of
warning signs that your child may
be struggling. Your role is critical
in identifying when your child may
need help.

Having a conversation like this can be
uncomfortable, but it is necessary. Assure that
the child feels safe and comfortable. Pay
attention to your tone of voice.

Things to Remember

•Plan to talk privately about your concerns at a mutually convenient
time in a place free of distractions.
•Be aware that a person may not open up to you until they are sure
that you care.
•A young person may downplay what they are going through to
avoid upsetting you.
•Let the young person know you are ready when they are — do not
put pressure on them to talk right away.
